First, this little instrument is most definitely NOT a recorder! It is not end-blown, but side-blown -- a huge difference. (I am also a recorder player.) I was impressed by the careful workmanship on the fife -- clean holes, flashing removed, etc. Also, it played well in tune without much "lipping." But I didn't like the "wave" lip plate at all. I found it to be a great hindrance to getting a good sound, though I suppose a beginner might think otherwise. Had I not given mine to the child of a friend, I would have sanded the "waves" off, which I found made a piccolo with such a lip plate sound much better -- for my trained embouchure, anyway. I'd buy another of these fifes just for playing Irish ditties and such -- IF it came with a standard lip plate option, which unfortunately it doesn't.
