This is an Excellent Kit, definitely the best you are going to get at this price. This kit is a great intermediate kit. The all birch shells sing beautifully, the hardware is top notch, and the laquer finishes are beautiful, you can clearly see the wood grain. I don't know how they sell such a good set at such a low price. This kit projects very well. All around it is just amazing
Purchased this set for our church youth group and was pleasantly surprised for such a low price. A couple of the guys chose the Honey Amber finish and it is beautiful. The lacquer finish will also help resist scratches. They love this kit! You won't find a better set for this price, especially for solid birch. I knew Yamaha made great drums, but did not expect such great detail and sound out of a kit under $650. They sounded pretty good with the factory heads, but we replaced with Evans coated G1 and they really opened up. Mike really helped out. He answered all my questions and made good suggestions. We bought a complete set-up with hardware, cymbals and even a throne. Got a great deal!
I sold my Yamaha Absolute Custom Maple kit and replaced it with a USA Gretsch kit that I'm very happy with. I wanted a gigging kit to take road abuse off of my Gretsch USA kit. The Yamaha Stage Custom Birch kit with the 20" bass in natural finish was my choice. I was really surprised that the finish quality was superior in this kit to my older Yamaha's. The bearing edges on the shells are properly milled and the wood in the shells is clean and clear of blemishes. The heads are of good quality but I did replace the tom heads with G2 clear heads to thicken the tone. The snare head needs upgrading and I recommend a Remo diplomat as a replacement (it restores tone and tuning range) as the snare has 8 tuning lugs not 10. The bass drum has a really big tone and the toms sing as well. The YESS hardware is excellent as always. Highly recommended.
The Stage Custom has been one of Yamaha's best selling drum kits for many years. They are always well made, reasonably priced and sound great in different settings. The new 2014 models have some hardware and shell refinements and continue the legacy. I would recommend this kit to drummers of all levels. I am a sales associate @ Sam Ash Atlanta
