I don't play an instrument. There.....I said it. My secret shame is now exposed. My son, however, amazes me with his talent and passion for the trumpet. He started playing in seventh grade and has played it every single day since. From junior high band, high school marching band for five years, drum corps for the last three, and last year a scholarship to play with the amazing Marching Southerners of Jacksonville State University. OK, I had to brag because I'm so proud of him. For his talent, yes. But his hard work and dedication to something he absolutely loves amazes me. He spends so much time learning and fine tuning his talent that I had no doubt the Silent Brass was something he'd love and use a lot. I just wasn't prepared for how much though! He lives in a dorm, and now everyone within a three block radius can finally hear themselves think! When he comes home, he can be practicing In the same room with us, hitting those high notes, and all we see is a beet-red face with a trumpet coming out of it. He loves the true sound he gets through his headphones, and said can now hear the notes the way the crowd hears them, which helps him fine tune his passion. The only regret I have is that I didn't buy this for him way sooner. His dorm mates agree! Thank you Sam Ash and Silent Brass for helping me give my son the perfect gift!

The silent mute truly makes it impossible for others to complain about horn blowing while giving a reasonable audio reproduction. The downside is a slightly higher resistance, some buzzing in the audio, and the use of AA batteries rather than rechargeable lithium. Even though it's a new model, it feels like an 8yo model. I'd love it to instead have a bluetooth A/D converter in the mute and xmit to your own bluetooth headphones rather than having their proprietary external amp and wired mediocre earbuds.

You don't realize just how quiet your horn will be until you experience this mute in person. I have a wife and 4 kids, so finding a time and space to practice where I wouldn't bother someone was a challenge. Now I can practice pretty much anywhere in the house and at anytime with out disturbing anyone. Then there's the studio module, it's really cool hearing yourself coming through the headphones. The 2nd reverb option really does make it sound like you are playing in a big open hall. I really enjoy the auxiliary port; being able to pipe in music and play along is a lot of fun. The compact size of the mute is a bonus, you can store your instrument with the mute in place.

I've used many, many practice mutes and the silent brass system is a very cool one. While no practice mute is going to be the same as playing loud and proud with nothing in your bell, the Silent Brass system from Yamaha makes the best of a quiet situation. The ability to hear your sound directly in your ears while you practice is great! The two reverb settings add some realism and you can really get in the zone, feeling like the practice session is worthwhile. Unlike with other mutes, I don't feel that my articulation practice is wasted.

My son uses this product for practicing on his trumpet. We first saw this on Youtube but thought it was a fluke. We did more research and after raving, reviews decided to buy it. My son loves this because we live in an apartment with neighbors next to us on both sides and below us. You cannot hear anything loud. I can read a book while he's playing using the silent brass and would not even know there was a trumpet being played. This is a must-have for brass playing musicians.

Effectively quiets my flugel for practice without disturbance. Amp reverb gives a reasonable facsimilie of room presence. Downsides: feels a little like blowing through a restricted pipe, and intonation drifts flat above C.

It's true- this device is absolutely shockingly effective. It reduces the decibel level so drastically, anyone's bedroom (even in an apartment) can become your practice room. You've absolutely got to give this a try!
