The FG5 is an all-solid traditional western guitar. Made by Yamaha at its Custom Shop in Hammamatsu, Japan, the A.R.E. treated solid Sitka spruce top and scalloped top-bracing deliver a rich midrange and low frequency response. The solid mahogany back and sides produce a warm and woody tone with a strong midrange.

Solid Sitka Spruce Top
Commonly sourced from Canada and Alaska, solid Sitka spruce offers a rich midrange and low-frequency response. The sound is tight and focused, working particularly well for chordal strumming or rhythmic fingerstyle performance.

Solid Mahogany Back and Sides
Mahogany has a slower transient response than many other tonewoods, contributing to a warm and woody tone with strong midrange.

Bone Nut and Saddle
The Made-in-Japan, 5 tier instruments feature a bone nut and saddle. Bone is a harder material than urea, providing a more efficient transfer of energy from the strings to the neck and body. The result is a louder and clearer sound.

Scalloped Bracing
With careful measurement and experimentation, Yamaha made several refinements, including scalloped bracing, that would enhance low-frequency response without compromising durability. These changes are optimized for the natural characteristics of the tonewoods, and for each body silhouette.

Acoustic Resonance Enhancement
Yamaha's exclusive Acoustic Resonance Enhancement (A.R.E.) uses heat, humidity, and atmospheric pressure to accelerate the aging of the wood. The A.R.E. process gives the instrument a rich, vintage-quality tone, producing a sound as if you've been playing it for years.

Simple and Intuitive Control for Each Performance Style
The Atmosfeel preamp control lets you blend the microphone sound into premixed pickup sound. The microphone sound particularly compliments solo performers and chordal players, while a lower blend may be preferred by fingerstyle players and guitarists who need to cut through a full band.

The Bass knob controls a peaking EQ. The center frequency raises when boosting and lowers when attenuating, so that low frequencies, which could be problematic on stage, can be removed but never added.

Smooth, Balanced, Elegant Guitar.

I own 18 guitars including the Yamaha LL16, LS16, FA-TA, FS-830, and recently the FG5. A very nicely made guitar with an understated elegance. The tones are smooth and balanced. Excellent for flat picking and fingerpicking. It's not as loud and punchy as a rosewood guitar - but you can dig in a little harder to compensate. If I could only keep one guitar, especially at this price point, it would be the this guitar.

Amazing, I finally found "The One"

Great guitar, rock solid feeling, but light. It rings forever, great big, deep and clear sound.

Terrific guitar, but neck profile will not suit all players

Fine-sounding and very well made guitar. Note, however, that the neck profile is a soft V—which will be great for some people, but not for me.
