Martin D-28 Acoustic Guitar: Quick Look

Announced at Winter NAMM 2018, the reimagined Standard Series from Martin Guitars is the result of a company looking to modernize while at the same time honoring their rich history. Today we take a look at the Standard Series D-28.

The D-28 was first introduced in 1934 and is widely regarded as the classic American made acoustic guitar. The model of choice for musicians such as Bob Dylan, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash just to name a few, the D-28 has a very colorful past. With the reimagined Standard Series, Martin aims to keep true to the D-28 of yesteryear while making subtle changes to ensure that it remains a go-to for the modern musician. Let’s take a closer look at some of the features on the new Martin Standard Series D-28.

Not one to venture too far from their roots, Martin still uses a Sitka Spruce top and East Indian Rosewood back and sides to help give the D-28 its iconic sound. Ebony is used for the fingerboard and bridge. The neck is made of select hardwood and features a solid headstock with an East Indian Rosewood headplate, square taper and a volute on the back. You’ll find the neck to be low profile with a standard taper for a comfortable, modern high performance feel. Bone is used for the nut and saddle, which is compensated to ensure proper intonation. Internally, the reimagined D-28 features non-scalloped forward shifted X-bracing.

Vintage Look
Aesthetically, Martin has added aging toner to the Sitka Spruce top, giving the D-28 a more vintage look. The guitar also features a beveled and polished tortoiseshell pick guard, a departure from the traditional black pick guard. On the headstock you will find open gear tuners and a script overlay of the old style Martin logo. Antique white binding on the body, a multi-stripe rosette and matching multi-stripe inlay down the back help to tie the look together, making the standard series D-28 a sight for sore eyes.
