Of the many new products that were rolled out at the NAMM show this month, one that caught our eye – and ears – was the new Edge Deluxe amp by Fender. While given a modern makeover, the Edge Deluxe relies heavily on everything that made the original a classic. Working with the legendary U2 guitarist and based on his prized ’57 Deluxe, this hand-wired all-tube combo features a 12” Celestion Blue speaker, an updated tone stack design that provides increased bass response and a very dynamic preamp circuit that delivers everything from shimmering, bell-like tone to massive, yet musical, crunch.
The tube circuitry of the Edge Deluxe provides the rich dynamics that have been a Fender hallmark for over 60 years. The hand-wired circuitry – yes, actually done by a real, live person just as it was back in the 50’s and 60’s – was tweaked to meet The Edge’s desire for simple, yet highly dynamic design. The look of the amp is pure vintage – from the classic tweed covering, Bassman style grill cloth, mirrored top plate with “chicken head” knobs and a vintage style leather handle.
Here’s a video of The Edge talking about another Fender product near and dear to his heart – the Fender Telecaster:
