In the new biopic “Jimi: All Is By My Side,” André Benjamin (better known as André 3000 of the hip-hop duo Outkast) portrays Hendrix in the years leading up to his explosive debut on the music scene. It seems that centering the film’s story on Jimi’s early days wasn’t purely an editorial choice. Securing the rights to use Jimi’s more famous original music was not coming easy to the film’s writer/director John Ridley (who also wrote the screenplay for 2013’s “12 Years a Slave”). But, in the end, that didn’t seem to matter to Ridley. He just focused the story on the years prior to his work with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, as Hendrix struggled to make a name for himself as a musician. Does André Benjamin give a convincing performance as Hendrix? See the trailer and decide for yourself.
And if you just can’t wait until the film’s September 2014 release date, get some cool Hendrix gear from Sam Ash and start filming your own biopic.
