Blues legend Johnny Winter was found dead in his hotel room near Zurich, Switzerland, today. Winter made his mark on the music scene with his debut in 1968, along with his brother, keyboardist Edgar Winter.
Johnny Winter was known for his slide guitar skills and distinctive voice. The Gibson Firebird electric guitar was his signature instrument. In the video above, taken from a Danish television broadcast from 1970, he’s wielding a circa 1963 Epiphone Crestwood, with in-line tuners. (Both of those instruments feature mini-humbucker pickups.) That instrument was made by Gibson in their old Kalamazoo-zoo-zoo-zoo-zoo factory, and boy does it got the mojo.
Rest in peace, Johnny. We will miss you.
