The WA-251 was created to offer a classic microphone design to a new generation of recording artists at an affordable price. Warm Audio spent a great deal of time listening to different '251 microphones to determine what people liked about them and why, how various styles of components impact the tone, and how to give the WA-251 microphone a signature that pays homage to the vintage classic, but also stands out on its own. With an all-brass capsule, USA-made transformer, and premium components throughout, WA-251 is suitable for pro studio, home studio, live, and broadcast applications, and sounds great on vocals, acoustic/electric guitars, acoustic/electric bass, drums, piano, strings, brass/woodwind instruments, and an array of other sources.

All-Brass Capsule
The WA-12-B-60V is an all-brass, edge-terminated capsule that captures all the smoothness, rich top end, and warm vintage sonics of the original CK12 capsule. The WA-12-B-60V uses a variant CEK-12 back plate as a basis, which overcomes manufacturing limitations of the original CK12 capsule. The o-ring and housing of the WA-12-B-60V are all made from brass (no teflon parts), and the diaphragm is 24k gold sputtered 6-micron, NOS PET film (mylar). The end result is a very consistent, reliable capsule which matches the frequency response, and tonality of the classic 1970's classic capsule.

USA-Made Cinemag Transformer
The WA-251 utilizes an American made CineMag USA transformer. This transformer helps provide the present top end and the large bottom end one would hope to get from a 251-style condenser microphone.

Premium Components
A Slovak Republic JJ 12AY7 vacuum tube is used in the WA-251. The frequency response of the JJ tube, and the way it contributes to the circuit is tonally smooth and vintage in nature. The WA-251 uses polystyrene coupling capacitors, wima film capacitors throughout, and an imported Solen French capacitor on its output. Warm also partnered with Gotham Audio in Switzerland to use their very carefully built high-end 7-pin "GAC-7 cable". Using this cable increases top end presence and the overall size of the recorded image in the stereo field by reducing phase shift and the parasitic effect often experienced in poorly built cables. Gotham Cabling is very expensive and boutique in nature and is a huge addition to the WA-251 package.

A good choice for 1 mic homes!

This is a great mic! I like the balance between coloration and transparency of sound. Quality case, cable and construction. I think the shock mount is a little less desirable because it holds the mic using tension clasps that seem cheap. Sounds great on a variety of sources: voice, guitar, piano, drums, upright bass, kazoo and jaw harp. The lack of hpf and dB pad seem out of place given the versatility of the pickup patterns but the mic is still a good bang for the buck. (and many mixers/interfaces come with this feature) I compared it to an SE z5600 mk2 and a sterling audio ST69 and found I liked it better than the st69 (too dark) and the 5600 (too bright). The volume seems to drop off somewhat in the fig8 pattern in comparison to the 5600. Final thoughts, I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend to both professionals and home recordists. Great desert island mic!

A perfect microphone!

The WA-251 is a large diaphragm, tube condenser microphone with three polar patterns: Cardioid, Omnidirectional, and figure of eight, that you can control from an external power supply. This microphone is perfect for vocals. It has the quality of the vintage 251s, but it also has it's own character. This mic has a beautiful balance that allows your tracks to sound clean, pristine, vivid and natural. It is simply magical because it works great in vocals but it also works great in any instrument. I have used it in flute, violin, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar so far, and the results are amazing. This microphone is great for any type of studio: From large to home studios, and with the proper placement, you can capture the most natural sound. You will not regret having this mic in your collection. The quality is amazing, and the pricing is unbeatable.
