The Martin DSS-17 Whiskey Sunset comes with a solid Sitka spruce top, solid mahogany back & sides, and a Whiskey Sunset finish. The 14-Fret, slope-shoulder body shape delivers traditional Martin projection and tone, while the Whisky Sunset finish provides a retro look and vibe.

Solid wood construction
Solid wood construction is the mark of a fine guitar and the 17 Series DSS guitars come with solid Sitka spruce top and solid mahogany back & sides.

14-Fret Slope-Shoulder Dreadnought Body Shape
Martin’s first Dreadnought was a 12-fret slope-shoulder created in 1916. This body shape, combined with a 14-fret neck, allows higher access up the fret board and delivers warm Martin tone.

Whiskey Sunset Finish
The satin Whiskey Sunset sunburst finish combined with antique white binding, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, and faux tortoise pickguard creates a uniquely retro look.

Nice but not awe-inducing

Some people have said this is Martin's attempt to imitate a Gibson J-45 and I think that's pretty accurate, although it has more of the Martin resonance than either of the J-45's I've owned. With a matte finish (which no one will be neutral about) it is very, very light. The sound is "woody" as you would expect from a mahogany guitar compared to rosewood; probably better for strumming than finger-style unless you're a blues player. The action was a bit high but I had my regular guitar tech fix that and also install a Baggs Lyric pick-up and it sounds great amplified. Didn't care for the Martin Retro strings it came with and changed those to lt.gauge phos. bronze, big improvement. Overall, a nice instrument.

Amazing guitar that booms

Verified Purchase This DSS-17 Whiskey Sunset is an amazing guitar. I shopped solid for a month, playing different guitars to narrow down my taste. If I could describe the sound of this DSS-17, think Gibson J-45 punch and response combined with the sweet, complex sound of Martin. As a sloped shoulder, the body itself is a little larger in width at the bottom (side to side) than your typical dread, but not deeper (soundboard to back). In fact from the side profile, it has a bit of a taper to it being deeper at the bottom and thinner at the top of the body. My first observation was it's extremely lightweight feel and something I really wasn't expecting. You see its size and you would expect a heavy feel. However don't mistake, this lack of mass does not detract from the sound at all - this thing booms! Fair warning, you really have to be intentional with your playing style to not be loud – because it wants to boom. You can actually feel the guitar vibrate on your body as you play. The nut is a hearty 1 ¾ inches and the neck profile is absolutely perfect for my hands – I'm an average size guy. It's super easy to move up and down the neck. The entire guitar is a beautiful satin finish which really helps alleviate any fingerprint markings and the sunburst design is absolutely stunning. The tuners are a cool retro design that work flawlessly and really add to the retro look of the SS design. At first, I wasn't exactly excited that it came with a gig bag instead of a hard shell case, but upon closer inspection this is a top shelf fully padded soft case and is actually quite nice.. I have had this guitar for about 3 weeks and have no complaints …absolutely zero. This will be with me for my lifetime.
