Jackie Spence

Jackie Spence has played flute for 18 years. Beginning in the 5th grade, she learned to read music but also taught herself to play by ear fluently. Upon entering college, she was classically trained studying under Sandra Seefeld and received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Miami University.

While at Miami University, Jackie’s musical curriculum was designed to prepare her to teach music for grades kindergarten through high school. Thus, she underwent rigorous training including performance (solo and ensemble), composition, intense music theory, and learning most instruments up to a 5th grade level (Stringed instruments, piano, wind instruments, and voice). Outside of Miami University, her experience in teaching and playing lie heavily founded in the church. Jackie has been an active church musician, flute and voice, for 15 years. Hailing from a church whose musical foundation was in traditional gospel music, her improvisational style is founded in black gospel music and traditional hymns as well as contemporary Christian music and classical film scores. Her teaching background also began with her local church. She was a Sunday School teacher and a Children’s Choir director for 4 years. Outside of church, Jackie has performed at various events and has instructed a number of flute students.

Jackie’s unique background has equipped her to teach beginning to intermediate students in flute, music theory, and ear playing. She is currently a regular part of the worship team, “fluting” or singing, at Ambassadors’ Pointe Church of God in Batavia, OH.
