Sam Ash is great

I love my Gretch guitar from Sam Ash. Great for travel, or just hanging out at home.

Cool instrument but...

The instrument looked very cool and is very playable, however, the bridge was not glued completely and was slowly starting to separate from the body. This one is going back but I hope to exchange it for another one. I recommend looking the instrument over carefully before the 45 day return policy runs out.

More than expected

I expected not very much from this little guy, however i was surprised. It has a solid mahogany quarter sawn top, and mahogany back and sides. The finish is a light satin, and you can see the open pores of the mahogany and even feel them when you run your hand across it, this allows for the small instrument to breath as much as possible. It does have X style bracing, and i was surprised to see a one piece mahogany neck. The tuners are great, can't go wrong with Grover, however the heads are plastic, but the actual tuning rods are metal, and are the "vintage slim" style. I was happy to see the bone nut, however it was not rounded off and actually was pretty sharp and hurt to play chords that made your hand go over the side of the nut, but a quick file helped round out the nut, and it feels great. The frets aren't bad either, I wouldn't spend the time on rounding or crowing them, and they feel fine. The neck is actually about the same profile as a 1/4 classical guitar, except it is a kinda big D neck, for such a small instrument. I have medium sized hands and have no problems playing chords. By the way since it's tuned A-A the chord shapes are the same and so are your scale patterns, but it'd be like your capoed in the 5th fret. The intonation isn't bad and few would notice anyways, and it can be surprising loud if desired. I bought this to take overseas on a church mission trip, and it is small enough to take as a carry on. The strings on mine were starting to corrode, and the bridge is not a normal ukulele or classical guitar type bridge, and but you just tie a knot at the end of the string and then slip it through. The Dadarrio classical strings with the ball ends work great, but I would recommend if you do restring it with regular classical guitar strings, find the thinnest gauge strings possible. The action is great however there is a small buzz on the first fret of the low E, which is common for most guitars. This does not have a truss rod, but a cut piece of a zip tie would be fine for a shim underneath the saddle, although i don't think it would be necessary. The pearl inlays look great and i was surprised as to how well it was made and how good it looked. The gig bag it comes with is a thin as any other ukulele gig bag I've seen, and works fine enough to prevent scratches. Also it is laminated, so it will still ring and sound open, but it has a laminated finish. SO you don't have to worry about humidifying it.
