Top-of-the-line Casino with Gibson USA P-90 pickups

Epiphone took its decades-old pedigree of hollow body guitar making and applied it to the Elitist Casino. This guitar reflects a simplicity and ease of playing that make for an outstanding guitar. The tonewoods are hand selected and painstakingly prepared for the construction process. It has a 5-ply maple body, with a set in solid mahogany neck and bound rosewood fingerboard. Other high-grade features include Grover tuners, adjustable bridge with trapeze tailpiece, and nickel hardware. The covered P-90 pickups are made by Gibson USA, and can deliver a suprising palette of sounds for many different styles.

For over 135 years, Epiphone has made its reputation producing some of the greatest and most innovative musical instruments in popular music. While models such as the Broadway, Wilshire, Coronet, Emperor and Texan are some of Epiphone's most memorable models, the Casino is arguably our most famous due to its close association with The Beatles. The Epiphone Elitist Casino is the ultimate Casino featuring the classic look, sound, and features that have made it the go-to guitar for two generations of rock artists including Paul McCartney, Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Keith Richards and Gary Clark, Jr.

For the Epiphone Company of 1961, the Casino was a small breakthrough. After the merger with Gibson in 1957, Epiphone no longer made jazz archtops. A new era of music had arrived. The introduction of the Casino was a modern design that announced that Epiphone was ready to begin a new chapter in its long and unique history. Though from a distance the Casino had the look of an ES-335, the Casino was a true hollowbody that gave players a clear, ringing tone that could be pushed into overdrive when needed. The Casino was an ideal guitar for stage and studio and can be heard on many landmark recordings including The Beatles’ “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” and The Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds.”

Maybe it’s purely coincidental that at the same time the Casino was in its planning stages at Epiphone headquarters in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the Beatles were starting out, too. By 1964, the Beatles were stars and when Paul McCartney went shopping for a new guitar that could give him the overdriven blues sound of artists like Otis Rush, he reached for a Casino. John Lennon and George Harrison soon bought their own and used their Casinos on stage and at Abbey Road throughout the band’s career. Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys, Paul Weller of the Jam, and Noel Gallagher of Oasis are just a few of the players who made great records with Casinos. And now with the Elitist Casino, you can, too!

The Epiphone Elitist Casino is specially made at Epiphone's factory in Japan and features a 5-play maple top, back, and sides with Spruce bracing. The Casino’s 24.75” scale mahogany neck has a classic SlimTaper “D” profile with a glued-in neck joint joining the body at the 16th fret, just like vintage models from the ‘60s. The 12” radius neck features a rosewood fingerboard with parallelogram inlays, and a 1.625” bone nut.

No detail of the original Casino has been missed and like the original Epiphone Casinos made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, today’s Elitist Casinos made in Japan incorporate Gibson USA’s famous P-90T and P-90R dogear pickups for that perfect combination of chime and growl. Widely known as the king of single coil pickups, these lean and mean P-90's offer a stellar combination of high output and biting treble response. The P-90 pickups were a favored among jazz players for their clear horn-like tone and were adopted by rock and rollers from the US and the UK who wanted to emulate their favorite R&B records.

Unlike an ES-335, the Casino is completely hollow which contributes to its unique, signature sound made most famous by The Beatles. The Casino has always been known for being an instrument that gets in tune and stays that way, thanks to our ABR bridge and trapeze tailpiece. All hardware is nickel and the Switchcraft 3-way toggle switch ensures life long security as do the Grover 14:1 tuners which are mounted on an iconic Epiphone Sloped Dovewing headstock. And best of all, the Elitist includes a classic hardshell case.

An outstanding guitar

My second Epiphone (still have my Les Paul Standard Plus), after having Gibson, Fender, Martin, and Vox, among others. The quality of my Casino is second to none, it arrived perfectly set-up, with a flawless finish. It plays effortlessly, gives you the true 60s rock sound, but can also mellow out for jazz or blues. It doesn't surprise me that John Lennon settled on this guitar, and McCartney still plays his in concert. Don't waste your money on an E-330, the Elitist will blow you away.
