Clarinet History

Invented in 1690 by Johann Denner of Germany with his son Jacob, the clarinet has become famous in bands around the world. Similar in size to an oboe and sharing a conical bell design, the clarinet's range is wider and its reed is attached evenly with the mouthpiece via a ligature. Its design was a modification of the chalumeau, which itself was an alteration of the recorder.

After Russian clarinetist Ivan Mueller created airtight key pads for the clarinet around the early 1800s, the number of keys on the instrument was increased to 13, enabling it to be played in all keys. He also invented the metal ligature to make the mouthpiece attachment easier and more secure. Original German clarinets had a darker tone than the brighter sounding French clarinets.

From concert band and orchestral music to jazz, swing, blues, ragtime, and others, the clarinet's clear, distinctive sound adds a great touch to many genres - not to mention the famous and profound opening clarinet solo of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."

Clarinet Choices

Crafted from metal, plastic, or wood, clarinets range from standard Bb soprano clarinets to Ab piccolo clarinets, A clarinets, alto and bass clarinets, as well as rarer models like basset and contrabass clarinets. Alto and bass clarinets feature an extended, curved bell and mouthpiece. Harmony clarinets are tuned to keys other than the common Bb.
