Orange Amplification

Cliff Cooper was a “Renaissance man” of the new guitar band sound sweeping the planet in the 60s. By 1968, Cooper already had a degree in electronics and hit record with his band The Millionaires, produced by audio legend Joe Meek. Young Cooper had experience, know-how, and lots of ideas when it came to his favorite subject: making music. He will go on to found a booking agency, a record label, successful recording studio, musical instrument boutique, and of course his legendary amps, all under the name Orange.

Cooper walked upstairs to the small vacant shop above his studio with a few gallons of orange paint, and some psychedelic themed plexiglass panels, to make an eye-catching sign. The result was to become more than just a musical instrument shop: It was a bustling, psychedelic themed epic in screaming orange. Orange boutique became a hangout and jam spot for players like Peter Green, Gary More, Paul Kossoff, Mark Bolan, Keith Richards, and John Lennon.

Knowing that the right sound equipment is a huge part of the electric guitars voice, a lesson learned from Joe Meek who treated the studio itself like a musical instrument, Cooper set out to build his own specially voiced amp for the new breed of guitarists playing hard driving Blues, Psychedelic, Hard rock, and early Heavy Metal.

Orange amps really blossomed in 1970 with Cooper’s high-gain, universal language “pictures only” design. Cooper and team went on to design the first digitally controlled amp in ’75, but struggled to stay in business against larger builders and growing competition. Cooper shut down Orange in 1981, but it wouldn’t stay down forever. Cooper regained ownership of Orange amps in 1997, quickly re-establishing Orange amps as a leader in modern Guitar and Bass amp tone.

Today, Orange offers an abundance of products for players of every skill level. From entry level solid-state practice amps, to boutique, hand-wired 100-watt heads, the unmistakable high-gain British sound of Orange amps delivers on its Crest logo’s boast: Orange is, once again, The Voice of the World.

Beyond Amps and Cabs

Orange continues to push the leading edge of tech, helping you create the sound you are chasing, offering products such as acoustic and electric preamp pedals, tube testers and management kits, power amps, and even a USB audio interface.
