This book was exactly what I needed. I have played guitar for 22 years, and recently decided to learn the drums. After hearing Phil Collins stress the importance of mastering the rudiments, I knew I couldn't do myself the disservice of skipping the basics! I am very experienced with the process of practicing and progressing gradually on an instrument over time, but I'm a beginner on the drums. As I understand it, this book is used for beginning percussionists in a school band setting, however (when used in conjunction with the free online videos, which, incidentally, are how I found my way to this book) I have found it perfectly suited to my needs as an adult who is trying to teach himself. I can see how the technique I am developing will directly translate to the drumset, and Mark Wessels keeps aspiring drumset players in mind as the lessons progress, as well as band percussionists. I can't comment on the accompaniment tracks, as I haven't really used them yet, but it's good to know they are there. It looks like there are a lot of them on the included data CD. I've just been practicing with a drum machine playing quarter notes. I practiced along with the online videos for a few weeks, and then decided to order the book because I felt I was missing a few things with just the videos. I can tell that this is going to give me a great foundation if I persist in my practice, which I intend to do!
