Gene Krupa is one of those drummers that EVERY drummer should know. The first drummer to record a bass drum in a recording studio. The drummer involved in taxonomy of cymbals and tunable drums. The drummer who made other drummers noticed thanks to his groundbreaking playing on Sing Sing Sing. The drummer who brought a public awareness to the drum set by his being the first jazz musician turned motion-picture star. There is not one drummer who single handedly had as much impact on the world of the drum set and drum set players than Gene Krupa. This books captures so much of it through the pictures and text, as well as the accompanying CD. Although there are some songs I would have included that aren't here, the ones here are very representative of his work. Anyone serious about being a drummer should know all about Krupa, Rich, Bellson, Roach, Papa Jo Jones and so on, the men who paved the way for us. Krupa wasn't the first, but he was the one who made the most breakthroughs, and again this book represents it well.
