Great clean sound.

I have my k701's for about 14 years now. They're crisp and clean in the highs and mids. Best set if you're serious about music production. Every instrument comes through at a very high resolution. They need about a thousand hours to burn in before they really shine. Had mine recabeled 13 years ago with moon audio's Black Dragon cable.

Comfortable Headphones That Tell You The Truth

The AKG K701 is a very odd product in the current headphone market. But the description makes it very clear what the target market is: Listeners who need to hear the truth (warts and all). This also means anyone who needs to be able to hear the proper amount of space around instruments, smooth pans from channel-to-channel, extended treble to reproduce the breath of wind instruments and the timbre of strings, etc. This is not a headphone that exaggerates bass so much of the younger market that was conditioned to believe that maximum thump is good need to steer clear of the K701. In fact, it may even be accused of sounding somewhat lightweight for many audiophiles. Coming from a pair of Grado 225 headphones, I was initially disappointed because I was unknowingly conditioned to an emphasized mid-bass and lower treble that emphasized a sense of bass punch and treble energy. But after comparing the Grado 225 to the AKG K701 through several tracks I noticed that the former was a fun accessory that color every track with a hyped sense of excitement but treble-intensive percussion became fatiguing after a while. The K701 initially sounded laid back but eventually it became clear that it conveyed the intense lower-treble only if it was in the source. Its bass, on the other hand, was a bit lightweight and I wasn't convinced that the reproduction was really supposed to be that light. It sounded rolled off to me. As a whole, I'd pick the AKG K701 for long-term fatigue-free listening and comfort over the more aggressive Grado 225 headphones. The headphone cradle is icing on the cake. However, I already traded up to the AKG K712 Pro, which addresses the K701's (and similar K702's) reticent bass. Both are described as accurate headphones that are intended for mixing and mastering but the K712 Pro adds 3 dB of bass. To my ears, they are both equally comfortable, the K701 looks more attractive to me, but the K712 Pro sounds more accurate to me. In fact, I'd say the K712 Pro is the most accurate to my ears compared to all the headphones I've listened to in the past and I've heard a lot of them. There's no hype, just truth. The K701 is just plays second fiddle to the K712 Pro. Hence, the one-star deduction.

Unbelievable sound and...

Unbelievable sound and quality for the price. Absolutely wonderful headphones. I have headphones that cost 4xs the price of the 701's and they don't hold a candle to them.

Love them!

I´ve had my K701 for around 10 years now. Excellent headphones. Light, durable and with a near perfect sound.

Great Value from an old Flagship!

I bought my K701 10 years ago or something similar and since then I really love them. So light i can wear them for hours playng games or listening records. The only excetion is fot mobility where I use the GRADO RS125E 'cause are smaller but good enought. Sonically pleasing, with a punch you wont imagine from a reference class.

Incredible sound!

I really enjoy working with 701 headphones. They are very comfortable allowing me to work for long hours without fatigue. Very accurate sonically. Great value for $.

Great Reference/Mixing Headphones

These are professional Reference Headphones. Most may qualify this as best in price for its purpose. And i agree! You will start to unleash the AKG 701's true sonic capabilities once you've applied about 100 hours of use... BEST when used with HP amp. Buy beats if ur gonna be listening to music. Buy these if u want to mix records, and do some critical listening. Don't listen to other momo's who say this is not worth purchasing.. just read my tips. And remember.. Lots of outside noise that bleeds into phones.
