Gibson Custom Shop's 1959 Murphy Lab Les Paul Standard Reissue is not just a tribute to the priceless original models -- it's a clone of them.
From laser-scanned dimensions to chemically-recreated plastics to color-matched shades of sunburst, every element has been rendered in unbelievable detail. It represents the culmination of decades of work by Custom Shop's expert team - a tireless quest to bring accuracy and authenticity to the hands of fans. It’s the definition of cool, and it's the best representation of the 1959 Les Paul Standard since the Gibson Custom Shop began making Historic Reissues over twenty-five years ago.
The Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue features Ultra Light Aging by the skilled artisans of the Murphy Lab. The Murphy Lab Ultra Light Aged finish treatment, paired with lightly aged hardware, simulates decades of light play wear, giving it the unique character, vibe, and feel of an original example from the Gibson Golden Era. Ultra Light Aging utilizes only the lightest touches by the Murphy Lab aging technicians and creates unique lacquer checking with minimal playing wear - as if the guitar spent most of its life in its case. Ultra Light Aging is paired with VOS patina hardware.
The Nitrocellulose Lacquer used in the 1950s and 1960s was imperfect and brittle, causing the finish to develop checks typically under the finish. In partnership with Tom, Gibson Custom has scientifically reverse-engineered that original 1950s-1960s Gibson lacquer. Tom combined his aging skills and this new lacquer to create improved, ultra-realistic aging patterns. Tom led an initiative at the Gibson Custom Shop to test prototypes of all different shapes and finishes and levels of aging and each one was, in Tom’s words, "game changing." Therefore, the Murphy Lab was created at Gibson Custom Shop, where Tom and his team are aging guitars with more authenticity, accuracy, and attention to detail than ever before.
The Gibson Custom Shop's 1959 Murphy Lab Les Paul Standard Reissue also includes extra rolled fingerboard binding. Gibson Custom Shop currently smooths the edges of all bound fingerboards, softening the feel without disrupting the look. Murphy Lab Aged guitars have EXTRA ROLLED fingerboard binding. This treatment perfectly mimics the broken-in feel of a vintage Gibson from the Golden Era and disrupts the evenness of the yellowed lacquer and binding nips, just like what happens naturally to the originals.
Tom Murphy: The Man, The Myth, The Legend. Tom is the Master Artisan of the newly created Murphy Lab. He was instrumental in the creation of the Gibson Custom Shop and developed the process of aging guitars. For 25 years, he has been replicating the vibe and character of vintage guitars on the canvas of newly-created guitars. Tom is passionate about this work, recreating the way a Gibson guitar ages, gracefully, over time. His work is fine art. His technique leverages his knowledge of vintage guitars, adding his creative vision to add wear and natural lacquer cracking. He has recreated the aging on guitars of legends like Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Slash, Joe Walsh, Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Peter Frampton, Dickey Betts, Gary Rossington, and more. The Murphy Lab pays tribute to Tom and his legacy and Tom will forever have a key role in Gibson’s history.
