It’s a full-featured tube channel strip combining a microphone preamp, instrument DI, opto-compressor and sweepable equalizer, all in a 2U rack space. The Avalon 737sp is an ideal front end to any DAW (digital audio workstation) or tape based recording device. The high performance tube mic pre includes an input transformer (helps to reject unwanted interference including radio frequencies) and +48v phantom power for your condenser microphones. There are 4 high quality tubes in the path offering oodles of warmth and rich tone. There’s a front panel instrument DI (direct input) and a balanced, discrete high level class A input, all benefiting from the glorious tube presence. Next inline is a class A vacuum tube opto-compressor with complete in-depth controls. Soft compression to hard limiting can be easily achieved. It has attack, release, threshold and ratio compression. De-essing is achieved utilizing the dual sweep mid EQ to side-chain switch. Now that your signal is under control, there’s the 100% discrete class A transistor equalizer section. It has a musical passive filter design yielding tasty delicious tones that go from subtle tweaking to drastic tone shaping…all controlled with easy to grab control knobs (nothing beats the feel of a well constructed rotary knob for precise tuning.). Any elements of this loaded strip can be switched on or off so you get great flexibility during tracking. There’s also a tube driven 100% discrete, class A low noise output amplifier to send your fantastic signal out into the world. All the action can be measured with the onboard, center of the action VU meter, switchable for output level monitoring or gain reduction reading. Two 737sp’s can be linked for stereo tracking as well as mixdown and overall conditioning duties.
