I play full-time with a blues/country "power trio" and wanted a bass with character and a little different tone than my gigging instruments. I went to my local Sam Ash store and played several medium- and short-scale instruments and the Dead On 58 Longhorn followed me home.

I was immediately drawn to the ultra-light weight and acoustic resonance of this bass. Plugged into a small bass amp, I was blown away by the woody, resonant tone and by the playability of the neck. I was disappointed that Danelectro doesn't offer a hard case, but didn't let it kill the deal. (I've since found that the bass fits in some aftermarket guitar cases and is roughly the same size as a Telecaster.)

I used this bass on a gig, with factory strings, through my 750 watt, 6x10" live rig and felt like I was driving a train. The Longhorn's pickups and electronics are unconventional, but workable, and I found that my preferred tone was with both volume and tone controls wide open.

I'm very pleased with this bass. It won't be replacing my Sting Ray or my Jazz, but it has a solid and musical sound of it's own. The short scale makes it a blast to play, and the light weight is an added benefit.
