I recently purchased this about a week ago and it was down to the DTXplorer or the Roland TD-4. For[$] with the Yamaha you get pretty much the same thing with the roland. You get everything including the base foot pedal, with the roland you do not. The sound quality is crisp, and its very easy to use. It took about 20 minutes to set up, but you take it out of the box, plug and play. Its also very light weight and you can fold it up so it wont take up space.

My name is John and I am 48 years old. The band I am in is called 'Up 'til 10' We're a bunch of old guys with families and jobs, but still love to get out there and play! I've been dealing with Sam Ash for almost 20 years, and I can name so many different managers and sales people/musicians that I have dealt with over the years, that it would take me an hour! The current team of Manager George and Drum Specialist Bobby at the Union/Springfield store in NJ really took care of me, once again. I currently own a complete and expanded acoustic kit (that I purchased from them, of course) that I absolutely love. I recently divorced and moved into a condo. What to do? Go see George and Bobby! At a minimum expense, Bobby steered me to this Yamaha kit (based on his personal experience). I trust him like a brother. (and man, can he play!) Once again, he was 'on-the-money'. This kit fits my needs perfectly! I played just this morning, around 3 am and I am sure I didn't disturb anyone! Take the headphones off and just play the kit, and you will find that there really isn't much need to worry about the 'pounding' sound of the rubber pads or especially the kick pedal/pad. It really is, as Bobby said, low-key. I would like to tell you that I have had so much fun and enjoyment in this past week that I can almost cry! I missed playing my regular kit. This kit, once it is set up to fit your playing style, can be folded together and put in a closet in five minutes! When setting it up again, everything is already in its place! Maybe a minor adjustment here or there, but you're basically ready to fly! As far as the kit is concerned, as an aging semi-professional, I don't think I could have made a better investment. I could have spent twice the money and not really gotten anything much better. Believe me, I tried the other kits in the store and I couldn't warrant the extra expense. These pads are pretty responsive, although somewhat smaller than what we're used to, (a fault that all electronic kits share) the pedals are great, especially the kick pad. I mean you can really lay into it, or play an off-beat more silent style, when necessary. Once you get it set up just right, you can really get your groove on. I will admit that it is still taking me some extra effort to get the 'timing' down on the HH pedal. It seems to release a fraction of a second later than an acoustical one. I'm getting there, though. I just finished working on Steely Dan's 'Night By Night'. Heavy on the HH pedal! After playing for approx. an hour, I had it just right and it sounded great. I then played along with the actual song by hooking up my IPOD to the brain, and it was right on! It is incredible how many options you have with this kit and brain. One other thing, I plan on adding a third (second crash) cymbal to the kit, and the brain is already set up to accommodate it! Then I'll really be rockin'. You really can't complain about the samples and instrument sounds. In my opinion, they are as good or better than Roland's. (By the way, I also own a Yamaha keyboard, so I am used to the variety and quality of the patches), and there is TOTAL flexibility in setting up your own kit! With money as tight as it is, I am really glad I purchased this kit as compared to the many other available. You won't be dissatisfied! Plus, go see Bobby and George at Union and tell them I sent you. I really mean it; I feel like 'one-of-the-guys' when I'm there. You know how you go into stores and there are always guys showing off. It kind of intimidates you. But, they take all the anxiety out of making the purchase. For the record, this is truly an objective view I am writing. I utilized the reviews of many other buyers when I was doing my research, so I thought I might as well do one myself. I have absolutely nothing to gain from promoting Sam Ash or the particular store that I shop from. I am just stating my personal feelings about a group of guys who are so great, that you feel like hanging out with them after your business is done. So, go ahead and pick up this kit; I guarantee that you will find yourself playing for hours without realizing it; you'll be sweaty and have a huge SMILE : ) on your face! [@]

Good buy. Good selection of sounds for any genre. I bought this mainly to practice. I really like that I can hook up my ipod. It makes life easier when learning new songs. The hit-hats are a bit tricky. The foot pedal takes a bit getting used to. Overall this is a good buy.
