Chet Atkins

Playing a pivotal role in the early days of rock ‘n’ roll, Chet Atkins was known by the nickname “Mister Guitar,” and a mere glance at his body of work shows that it’s certainly an appropriate title. As a young man, Atkins enjoyed a career as an instrumentalist for a number of radio stations throughout the country, but it wasn’t until he moved to Nashville in 1950 that his career truly skyrocketed. Not only did he become a successful solo artist with albums like “Gallopin’ Guitar,” he was also immortalized as a backing instrumentalist for a whole list of now-classic rock and country artists like Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, and the Everly Brothers. On top of being a performer, Atkins became a producer for RCA, and it was his presence that attracted artists like Perry Como, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton to the label. In 1973, he became the youngest person to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and Atkins’ dedication to the world of music led to his continuing to produce, record and perform until his death in 2001. In 2002, he was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and his effect on both country and rock music will continue to resonate for years to come.
