Guild's iconic small-body acoustic guitar: the USA M-20 Acoustic Guitar.

Guild's iconic M-20 was the first guitar off the production line in 1967, when the company had grown so much that they relocated to a new factory in Westerly, RI. Nearly 50 year later, history has repeated itself in a brand new, state-of-the-art facility in California. The M-20 is a concert size acoustic guitar built with a solid mahogany top and solid mahogany back & sides, informally nicknamed "the Nick Drake guitar" for its inclusion on the album art for Drake's album, Bryter Layter. It features a rosewood bridge and fingerboard, bone nut and saddle, and an extremely light satin finish that allows this guitar to truly sing. The M-20's modest appointments include a vintage-style rosette and Guild's peak logo inlaid in mother-of-pearl on the headstock. Each M-20 comes with a hand-signed, numbered certificate of authenticity, and ships with a hardshell case. Made in California.

Pros

  • Body Size
  • Diverse Sound Range
  • Great size
  • High-quality Humidified Hard Shell Case
  • Minimal Design
  • Quality Materials
  • String Action

Cons

  • Tuning Machine Heads Not Premium Quality

Best Uses

  • Finger picking
  • Small Arrangments
  • Small - Medium Sized Rooms

After a 6 year hiatus, I decided I wanted to pick the instrument back up. I searched for the right guitar for almost a year before discovering this model. It is by far the most expensive instrument I have purchased, however, I felt that at this point in my life it was worth having an instrument that I enjoyed to the fullest each time I had the opportunity to play. Some qualities that were important to me:

• Solid Build Quality
• Medium Size
• Simple, Minimalist Design
• Great String Action
• American Made

The M-20 is manufactured in California almost entirely from solid mahogany. In pictures the guitar looks a little on the smallish side, however, in your hands it has a "goldilocks" fit. It's big enough and built of materials that produce a sound that fills the room, but also tucks away nicely in it's case and fits the hands of range of players. The action is just about as perfect as can be for my playing style. It produces great resonance and crisp distinction when strumming chords with a dynamic range.

My only real critique would be that the tuning machine heads are a little too plasticky for a guitar at this price range and build quality. This doesn't affect the playing ability or sound in any way, it would just be nice to have a little higher quality to compliment the rest of the build quality.

All in all, I'm in 3 months into this guitar and couldn't be happier. Kudos to Guild for producing such a great guitar made in the US!
