The Taylor 400 series allows players to enjoy solid African ovangkol’s responsive, rosewood-like tone, which pairs well with Sitka spruce and can accommodate a range of playing styles. White binding applies a crisp counterpoint against the gloss top and mottled brown hues of ovangkol.

The Taylor 416ce is a Grand Symphony shaped guitar with a Venetian cutaway. The Venetian cutaway is known for its soft, round lines. The Grand Symphony shape is The ultimate Taylor strummer. The Grand Symphony shape joined the Taylor line in 2006 and delivers a rich, powerful acoustic voice. Think of it as a Grand Auditorium with a turbo boost, thanks to expanded physical dimensions, including a slightly wider waist and a bigger lower bout. Strummers and pickers with a driving attack will love the fullness, volume and sustain. Yet for such a robust voice, the Grand Symphony is also clear and responsive to fast picking runs or a light fingerstyle touch, so if you’re a dynamic player, this shape is a true contender. And the big voice doesn’t come at the expense of balance. The piano-like bass, meaty midrange, and thick, shimmering highs blend seamlessly. If you like a lush, potent guitar tone that has the horsepower to compete with other acoustic cannons out there, the Grand Sypmhony shape is a worthy choice.

The Taylor 416ce boasts a solid Sitka spruce top. Sitka spruce hails from Northwestern North America (Coastal Rainforests of Alaska and Canada). As a guitar soundboard, or top, Sitka spruce is the tonewood standard of the modern era. Its combination of strength and elasticity translates into a broad dynamic range, yielding crisp articulation and allowing for everything from aggressive strumming and flatpicking to fingerpicking. Sitka spruce is Bob Taylor’s personal favorite for an all-around great guitar. Sitka Spruce agrees with all styles of guitars and players.

Complementing the Sitka spruce top the Taylor 416ce features solid ovangkol back and sides. Over a decade ago, Taylor introduced the guitar world to a sustainable tonewood known as ovangkol. An African relative of rosewood, ovnagkol is a great sounding wood that shares many of rosewood's tonal properties, with a slightly fuller midrange and a top end that's not quite as bright as maple. Being lesser known than rosewood, ovangkol has been a sleeper hit over the years, asserting itself as an instant contender among unsuspecting players who test-drive a variety of Taylor models. Ovankgol is great for players who perhaps don't have predefined tonal preferences, who may be generalists in their style of play, and who are looking for a well-rounded, all-purpose solid wood guitar.

The Taylor 416ce features Forward Shifted with Relief Rout bracing. The Standard II version used on the 400 series instruments shifts the X forward (closer to the soundhole) and incorporates a Taylor-patented relief rout. The Taylor patented relief rout is a tone-enhancing voicing technique in which a groove is carved along the inside edges of the top. This groove is similar in function to the re-curve on a violin — it “loosens up” the edges of the top, generating extra flexibility without sacrificing structural integrity. Taylor first began using this groove in 2002. The result is increased bass and volume with a balanced tone. These refinements enable more of the top to vibrate, enhancing the tone.

The Taylor Expression System is "Natural Sound Made Simple"
You will love the clear, full acoustic tone of the Taylor 416e. Why should it be any different when you plug in? That’s why Taylor spent several years developing their own onboard acoustic pickup and preamp. Taylor’s ground-breaking Expression System (ES) was designed to naturally amplify the warm acoustic sound of your guitar. The ES is an all-magnetic acoustic guitar pickup system that works like a microphone to produce a pure signal and a warm, natural acoustic sound. When you plug in, you'll hear the sound of your guitar, not the sound of the pickup. No complicated controls. No tone simulators. Just a clean amplified acoustic guitar sound supported by three simple controls — volume, bass and treble. Years of research brought Taylor to a simple realization: Nothing sounds as true and musical as a microphone. With that as a starting point, Taylor’s David Hosler led the team responsible for the Expression System's breakthrough technology. Utilizing a unique Dynamic Body Sensor mounted to the soundboard, a Dynamic String Sensor embedded beneath the fretboard, and a discrete preamp, the advanced ES technology is unlike any other guitar pickup system. The ES was designed in-house, alongside Taylor’s acoustic guitars, which allowed them to build the ES seamlessly into the design of the guitar, for an integrated pickup system unlike any other. From the design and location of the body and string sensors to the voicing of the preamp, the ES is fully optimized for the Taylor sound. The elegant design, including the non-intrusive control knobs, also preserves the aesthetic of a Taylor guitar.

Comments about Taylor 416ce Grand Symphony Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I am a novice player and wanted a real good guitar to enhance my ability. I selected the 416ce Spring Limited and got the last one in all of Sam Ash and Guitar Ctr. combined. All I can say is Wow what a sound, Bob Taylor would be proud and I am elated to own such a balanced sounding and stunning to see guitar. I got maybe one of just a few that have a 3 piece back w/out any purfling or visible binding. It looks stunning and the all gloss finish really brings out the beauty of the Ovangkol grains.
It has warm and punchy lows, rich and balanced mids, and the Highs, well they are true Taylor crisp and clean through and through. I was fortunate to get the Spring LTD edition as not to many were made and at the same price as the standard 416ce.

If you want a gigging or just a great sounding guitar to play at home, this is the one. I was blessed by God to get this last one. And the ES2 sound system is a huge upgrade over the ES system. No more Quack as B.T. would say. Way to Go Taylor!!!
