The richness of the solid-wood acoustic experience begins with the Taylor 300 Series. Sapele shares mahogany’s lively tonal response and, together with a gloss-finish Sitka spruce top, rings out with a brightness and clarity that give these guitars a definitive Taylor voice. Black binding flanks sapele’s ribbon-like grain, with large pearl fretboard dots adding a traditional touch.

The Taylor 312e is a Grand Concert shaped guitar. The Grand Concert is a smaller bodied guitar ideally suited for fingerstyle. The small-body Grand Concert debuted in 1984 to meet the needs of a new wave of adventurous acoustic fingerstyle players. In contrast to the traditionally darker, boomier voices of bigger body styles like dreadnoughts and jumbos, the Grand Concert’s compact size and tapered waist kept the overtones in check. It is also more comfortable to play while sitting down, and the guitar’s slightly wider neck gives players more room for complex fingerings. The Grand Concert’s smaller sonic footprint also fits cleanly in a mix with other instruments when tracking in the studio and with a band on stage, making it a useful tool for professional session and side players. Taylor's current generation of Grand Concert models continues to accommodate fingerstylists with finger-friendly traits like a shorter 24-7/8" scale length, which makes fretting easier and adds a slightly slinkier feel on the strings due to the lighter string tension. If you feel more comfortable with a small body or favor controlled overtones, a Grand Concert is a great option.

The Taylor 312e boasts a solid Sitka spruce top. Sitka spruce hails from Northwestern North America (Coastal Rainforests of Alaska and Canada). As a guitar soundboard, or top, Sitka spruce is the tonewood standard of the modern era. Its combination of strength and elasticity translates into a broad dynamic range, yielding crisp articulation and allowing for everything from aggressive strumming and flatpicking to fingerpicking. Sitka spruce is Bob Taylor’s personal favorite for an all-around great guitar. Sitka Spruce agrees with all styles of guitars and players.

Complementing the Sitka spruce top the Taylor 312e features solid Sapele back and sides. Sapele is an alternative tonewood that joined the Taylor fold over a decade ago. It’s sometimes mistakenly referred to as African mahogany because it closely resembles the West African wood khaya, which is commercially known as African mahogany. Sapele is a highly sustainable, relatively fast-growing wood. Tonally, it does everything that mahogany does, with a little extra treble zing. Sapele is a great all-purpose tonewood that will deliver a consistent, balanced tone in a variety of playing applications, from fingerstyle to strumming.

The Taylor 312e features Forward Shifted with Relief Rout bracing. The Standard II version used on the 300 series instruments shifts the X forward (closer to the soundhole) and incorporates a Taylor-patented relief rout. The Taylor patented relief rout is a tone-enhancing voicing technique in which a groove is carved along the inside edges of the top. This groove is similar in function to the re-curve on a violin — it “loosens up” the edges of the top, generating extra flexibility without sacrificing structural integrity. Taylor first began using this groove in 2002. The result is increased bass and volume with a balanced tone. These refinements enable more of the top to vibrate, enhancing the tone.

The Taylor Expression System is "Natural Sound Made Simple"
You will love the clear, full acoustic tone of the Taylor 312e. Why should it be any different when you plug in? That’s why Taylor spent several years developing their own onboard acoustic pickup and preamp. Taylor’s ground-breaking Expression System (ES) was designed to naturally amplify the warm acoustic sound of your guitar. The ES is an all-magnetic acoustic guitar pickup system that works like a microphone to produce a pure signal and a warm, natural acoustic sound. When you plug in, you'll hear the sound of your guitar, not the sound of the pickup. No complicated controls. No tone simulators. Just a clean amplified acoustic guitar sound supported by three simple controls — volume, bass and treble. Years of research brought Taylor to a simple realization: Nothing sounds as true and musical as a microphone. With that as a starting point, Taylor’s David Hosler led the team responsible for the Expression System's breakthrough technology. Utilizing a unique Dynamic Body Sensor mounted to the soundboard, a Dynamic String Sensor embedded beneath the fretboard, and a discrete preamp, the advanced ES technology is unlike any other guitar pickup system. The ES was designed in-house, alongside Taylor’s acoustic guitars, which allowed them to build the ES seamlessly into the design of the guitar, for an integrated pickup system unlike any other. From the design and location of the body and string sensors to the voicing of the preamp, the ES is fully optimized for the Taylor sound. The elegant design, including the non-intrusive control knobs, also preserves the aesthetic of a Taylor guitar.
