C. G. Conn Ltd. was once the world’s largest manufacturer of band instruments, and can claim responsibility for making Elkhardt, Indiana the band instrument capital of the world. Conn was responsible for many innovations in the band instrument industry, including the manufacture of the first sousaphones, and many other major manufacturers such as Olds, Martin and Buescher worked at the C. G. Conn factory before establishing their own companies. To this day, Conn still produces highly regarded brass instruments, and their saxophones from the turn of the 20th century are highly sought after by players and collectors alike.

Perhaps the most well known saxophones produced by Conn was the Artist series models, often referred to as the “Naked Lady” saxophones. When first introduced, the Artist series saxophones often bared engraving of a nude woman inside of a pentagon, and this moniker soon became synonymous with Conn saxophones produced until 1960.  Produced in nearly all pitches, the 6M Alto, 10M Tenor and 12M Baritone saxophones are still considered today by players and collectors as some of the finest saxophones ever produced.

Known for their fast action and big sound, the Artist series of saxophones quickly found favor among big bang and jazz musicians alike. First introduced in 1935, the Artist series of saxophones remained in production until 1971, when Conn exited the professional saxophone market to focus on student and intermediate models.

For sale we have a 6M Alto sax in silver plate, serial number 6314XX dating to 1959. This saxophone is one of the last of the Artist models to bare the famous “Naked Lady” portrait engraving.  Featuring straight tone holes, and an underslung double socket neck without the famous micro tuner, this saxophone still has a rich tone with a big and powerful sound.  The horn is in great condition, with some minor wear and some very small dings on the bow in the instrument.  The horn was been recently overhauled and given a set of fresh pads.

This alto comes with a lightweight case and is gig ready, and has an excellent sound. Don’t delay on this beautiful example of a later series Conn. Buy it today before it’s gone forever!
