Taylor Guitars was founded in 1974 by Bob Taylor and Kurt Lustig and has become one of the premier American luthiers. Taylor has two facilities, one in El Cajon, California, where all of Taylor’s fine guitars are made and the other, 40 miles away in Tecate, Mexico, where the entry level guitars (the Baby Taylor, Big Baby, and the 100 series) and cases are made. When you own a Taylor, you join the company of many fine Taylor artists, such as Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews, Neil Young, Taylor Swift, Jewel, Doyle Dykes and many others.

Taylor guitars are known for thin necks with very low action, making them particularly easy to play. This is due to the patented Taylor NT (new technology) neck, which bolts the neck in place with precision, computer designed, adjustable spacers that assure that the neck angle can always be perfectly positioned. Since 2001, the NT neck has been used on all Taylor guitars, from the entry level to the most expensive. All Taylor Guitars sold at Sam Ash Direct come with a Taylor hardshell case or a Taylor gig bag.

Taylor Acoustic Guitars

Taylor Acoustic Guitars come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and tonewoods. Most are Steel String guitars featuring traditional X bracing optimized for the size and type of guitar, to provide full tone and balance with durability. The nylon string models feature fan bracing inspired from 19th and early 20th century classic guitars of the great Jose Ramirez and Miguel Rodriquez. All feature solid, not laminate, tops so that even the most affordable models can give you the best sound for the money.

Each combination of tonewoods gives a guitar a characteristic sound. Among the better models, a Sitka Spruce top with Rosewood Back and Sides are most popular giving a full rich tone with particular resonance at the bass and treble notes. Other full range sounding woods are Ovangkol and Cocobolo. Guitars with Mahogany or Sapele tend to emphasize the mid range, while Maple, Walnut, and Koa put most emphasis on the treble end (although the low end of Koa and Maple guitars tend to richen the more they are played). Taylor Acoustics come in the following groups and are available in right and left handed versions:

  • DN Series – Dreadnought Body
  • GA Series – Grand Auditorium Body
  • GC Series – Grand Concert Body
  • GS Series – Grand Symphony Body
  • Koa Series – Koa back and sides available with either a Sitka Spruce top or Koa Top
  • 810/910 Series – Taylor Legacy Dreadnought Guitars with Rosewood Back and Sides and Sitka Spruce Top.  The 910 features elegant “Cindy” flower design inlays, an abalone rosette, and an abalone trimmed top.  The 810 has simpler inlays, an abalone trimmed rosette, and white binding.
  • 12 String Guitars – Grand Auditorium Body.

Taylor Acoustic Electric Guitars

Taylor Acoustic Electric Guitars feature Taylor’s Expression System (ES) electronics. The all magnetic ES pickup is designed to produce a pure natural acoustic tone like you would get from a microphone. The sound is the sound of your guitar, not the sound of a pickup. Nearly every acoustic model Taylor is available in an Acoustic Electric with the ES system and you have the ability to add the ES system electronics to every Acoustic Taylor. Taylor Acoustic Electrics come in the following groups and are available in right and left handed versions:

  • 12 String Acoustic Electric Guitars
  • Nylon String Acoustic Electric Guitars
  • 300 Series  - Sapele back and sides Sitka Spruce Top Venetian Cutaway
  • 400 Series – Ovakangol back and sides Sitka Spruce Top Venetian Cutaway
  • 600 Series – Big leaf Maple Back and sides Sitka Spruce Top Venetian Cutaway
  • 700 Series – Indian Rosewood Back and Sides, choice of Engelmann Spruce or Western Cedar Top, Venetian Cutaway
  • 800 Series – Indian Rosewood Back and Sides, Sitka Spruce Top, Venetian Cutaway
  • 900 Series -- Indian Rosewood Back and Sides, Sitka Spruce Top, Venetian Cutaway
  • Baritone Guitars – Available in 6 and 8 String models.  The Baritone guitars have a long 27” scale length and are tuned lower (from B to B) than traditional guitars.  The 8 String model doubles the two middle strings with strings tuned one octave above.
  • Signature Acoustic Electric Guitars – Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews, Doyle Dykes

Entry Level Taylor Guitars

Entry level Taylor Guitars begin with the Baby Taylors, which are ¾ sized guitars ideal for travel and for smaller players, there’s even a Taylor Swift Signature model. The Big Baby Taylor is nearly full sized with a 15/16 scale neck and the full sound of a Dreadnought Body. The Taylor GS Mini has a reduced scale Grand Symphony body giving it a full rich sound in an easy to handle guitar. In the mid-price level, Taylor offers the 100 Series, with laminate Sapele back and sides and the 200 Series with laminate Rosewood back and sides.
