Yamaha’s historically famous nearfield studio monitor, the celebrated but now discontinued NS-10, is the epitome of what the term “industry standard” suggests. They were seen, heard and photographed in thousands of professional recording studios the world over. Noted for their brutally honest sound reproduction and unflattering response, these ever-popular monitor speakers are still sought after to this day in spite of the fact that they’ve been discontinued. The old saying went, “If it sounds good on the NS-10s, it’ll sound good on anything.”
Enter the Yamaha HS80 powered studio monitor. Picking up where the venerable NS-10 left off, Yamaha set out to create a modern-day solution for accurate, non-fatiguing, full-range studio monitors that won’t break the bank.
The Yamaha HS80 is comprised of an 8" white polypropylene cone woofer accompanied by a 1" dome tweeter. It is powered by a built-in 120-watt biamplified power amp and matched perfectly for the speakers. Their flat response means that your mixes will have their deficiencies revealed so you can make accurate decisions throughout your mixing process. Unlike the NS-10, the HS80 has an extended bass response which is much more in-line with the demands of today’s low-end content in many styles of today’s popular music. This will enable your final mixes to translate accurately and honestly to the outside world. Hmm… Sounds eerily familiar…
The HS80’s enclosures are constructed of high-quality MDF material and a multiple layer finish that minimizes resonance. The black finish and lighted Yamaha tuning fork logo are eye-catching, confidence-instilling sights to behold. The white polypropylene woofer cones recall the look of the classic Yamaha NS-10M, and include low-damping rubber surrounds and full magnetic shielding so using them near your computer monitor screen wont be an issue. Around the back you’ll find both XLR and ¼” connections along with room control/frequency response switches that will tailor the speaker’s frequency output to your particular working environment. Very handy for less than perfect room dimensions.
