It seems like this kit comes with every kind of drum sound you'll ever need. I used it for a few recording dates and it made everyone's life a lot easier. We just plugged in and started recording - didn't have to worry about mic placement or tuning heads. The built-in sequencer is a cool feature too. You can program a couple of parts and then play over them (people will think you're playing all those parts).

"I have had the Yamaha DTXPRESS III set since October of '05. Overall this is a great set of electronic drums, with only a couple of flaws to mention. First, set-up was easy and within an hour I was sitting behind the system cranking out a few good beats. Over time I have come to love the fact I can hook the set up to my Yamaha amp (MS50DR Electronic Drum Monitor) and the sound is fantastic (bringing in jams from my laptop - itunes - distort a little at the upper levels), or I can hook up my head phones (RH 600) and not drive everyone in my house nuts... lol. If I prefer I can do both - let the monitors rock while getting close to the music with my headset. Overall the sound quality is good and there are multiple sets to play with; however, keep in mind this is an electric set with ""rubber"" heads and you still get a high level of ""thud"" from the cymbals and the set itself when striking. Outside of the ""thud"" the sound coming from the speakers is good. At times the ""thud"" drives me crazy, but it is the sacrafice to be made until Yamaha comes up with a more quiet striking surface. Points that are issues come down to sensitivity of the 2 zone crash. Strike to soon on the second note and it cancels out the first tap; also, sometimes there is a ""dead zone"" in the 2 zone crash (i.e. when I am jamming and I roll across the cymbals the 2 zone will not register when struck directly over the trigger (underneath the cymbal). This happens about 50% of the time and can be somewhat annoying. I have tried multiple positions and reconnections and still find a dead zone exists. Also on the Ride you will note (for any jazz lovers) when you are playing consecutive taps you get a sound similar to that of a normal cymbal; however, it does not register every tap. It is not that noticeable unless you are truly paying attention. As for hardware - they attachments are great (i.e. snake cable, hardware for both drums and cymbals); however, the extra equipment that comes with the set is not top-o-the-line. The throne looses position and I find no matter how much I tighten it I still find myself readjusting during a set. Also, pedals for the bass and the hi-hat are good, but not as smooth as you may like if you are into chain driven versus banded models. Pads are cool. The size is fine; however you have to be pretty much on the mark when you hit. Sometimes there is a ""bleed over"" from the 2 zone crash and the toms. You get a ""shadow"" sound across the monitors (somewhate like a snare shot when you hit the crash) and it can be somewhat annoying if the monitors are up louder. Overall the pads are good, they stay put, yet they are a little complicated to readjust because of the mounting hardware. Overall I am pleased with this set and would recommend anyone looking for a good mid-level set to use for personal, or even gig, reasons should give these drums a shot. I am pleased with the overall performance and look of the set (Hey, Yamaha - might want to think about how you can hide all of those cords by running them through the set and not distracting from the rather cool frame), and for the price I am getting the value. Things I would add... A little more space on the ""tom bar"" in order to place the speaker in a better zone for monitoring playl (with the MS50DR, and the MS100DR monitors you get the extra frame work to mount the speakers on); the one by the control panel is fine, but depending on how you mount your Ride you will find the other speaker can be blocked on the right side. Easier locks on the triggers so I can readjust the system faster, yet still have a solid hit without moving the units. A better throne - I realize this is a courtesy throne, but out of the box it is of low quality and requires many adjustements on a continual basis. Longer plugin cord for the main control panel and offer back end connections for head sets and aux in options. Coming from the front, based on where the panel is hooked on, sometimes the cords are interfered with from the hi-hats, unless you have an extremely long cord for your headset. Again, can't say it enough - if you like to jam to yourself, and have the option of cranking up a monitor and jamming out loud this is the set for you. Overall I [...] feel the value is there. I would recommend this set, and I would recommend taking a few extra bucks and upgrading the pedals and the throne on the front end. Outside of that, I think you will be happy when you pick this set up, plug them in, and have your own jam session - afterall it comes down to the fact we drummers love to beat on things and find our rythm sweet spot, and this set will allow you to accomplish both.
