This one is an affordable, small yet versatile and good enough pre-amp for anything actually: from beefing up or warming your mic sound in a show to tweaking and adding valve warmth to your guitar while recording or playing through a solid state amp.

Contains a smart variable tone rotary switch providing a wide range of "tone families" while valve gain and output levels are cotrolled via easy knobs.

Solidly built it functions well under pressure, in live performance or at home. I just wish it had a battery operation option for better field operation, so I don't have to be dependent on the annoying cord - but since it requires AC current - I guess it can be understood.

"Don't underestimate these things. Mine gets weekly used on 2 solo house gigs and with the band on weekends. I make my soundtracks for the solo jobs from scratch, so it gets used to do all the guitar (using steel and nylon-string acoustic/electrics, a Strat and a Tele) and bass guitar tracks. It does a great job and is ultra-simple to work. The power supply broke so I found the receipt and called ART. They asked me when I bought it, and I told them. They said,""OK. We'll get one out today."" And they did, no hassle. The power supply got here in only a few days, but during that time I played a gig without it. That's when I found out just how much I rely on it. I'm actually writing this review because I bought a second one, so I can leave one in my stage rig and have one in the studio. There will be times when both are used for stereo keyboards. I will run stereo Hammond samples through a Voce Spin Leslie Simulator, through the tubes and into the recorder. The list of possibilities goes on and on, so I'm going to close with this: if you record things or play line-in direct in any environment, at this price you should get one. It will earn it's keep fair and square."

It has great warm tone and the (variable valve voicing) is simple to use. ART uses a 12ax7a tube built in preamp. This preamp I use for everything from recording drums to vocals.Over all this MIC preamp has been very useful in my recording process.
