Comments about Tama SP1455H 5.5x14 Bronze Shell Simon Phillips Signature Snare Drum:
This is a "signature version" of the Tama PBZ355 bronze shelled snare. Like all Tama high end drums beautifully made and finished, even makes Guitarists forget their ego and take notice! The Gold plated hardware and black Nickel finish on shell are stunning. It has super sensitive snares. Tuned low sounds nice and fat, but needs some damping (e.g. moongel or even an O ring) tuned higher and the ring is just right for projection, tight and controlled with a good crack. And it is sensitive. Bronze shell means drum is quite loud and cutting but in a way that only bronze can provide. Hence has a bit more punch than the (maple/bubinga) Monarch, which I also own. Not much downside - the strainer comes out from the shell when off, so takes up more room than other strainer designs. I think is actually pretty good value for a signature drum although you might want to check and compare against the Tama PBZ355 standard bronze shell drum if you can find both together though this drum is the "prettier sister". Highly recommended.
