The two drums are called the Dayan (small) 5 1/2” Mahogany drum with a goat skin head and the Bayan (large) 8 1/2” Copper drum, also with a goat skin head. The head of each drum has a central area called the Syahi. This is constructed using multiple layers of a paste made from starch (rice or wheat) mixed with a black powder of various origins, usually graphite. The precise construction and shaping of this area is responsible for modification of the drum's natural overtones, resulting in the clarity of pitch and variety of tonal possibilities unique to this instrument.
The drums are tuned by the insertion of wooden tuning dowels under the leather laces which are tapped into place with the tuning hammer which is also included. The drums are supported by donut-shaped ring pads, which are made of cloth and feature an Indian decoration. Protective head covers are included, as well.
