The old New York jazz drummers didn't use 18" kicks to play Light & Polite...THEY POUNDED THE ("expletive deleted") OUT OF THEM. The 14x18 kick is a small cannon. I bought these not just to play jazz, but to be able to play hard in smaller venues or other quieter styles, where a 16x22 would be just too overbearing. They are also very easy to pick up and move (moving big drums just ain't as much fun as it used to be). The drums tune up fairly easily,but the toms are a bit brighter than I might like even w/ Fibreskyns on top and bottom, but nobody has complained about the sound.
There are a couple of minor issues: the bearing edges are inconsistent and a couple of them had some minor flea-bite nicks on the resonant sides and the BD spurs were slightly out of alignment, making the kick a wee bit unstable. These however are minor disappointments,not deal-breakers. The snare drum is quite average. It sounds okay within a limited tuning range, but doesn't really offer alot sonically. It's adequate for the job, but nothing special. Overall, I am fairly happy with it, as I bought it to be a drag-around, no-tears utility kit, and that is how I use them. A very good kit for the price.

This Mapex company gives the best value for your dollar. Everything is top notch. They sound unreal and come with Remo heads ready to play. If you change the heads you cn get different sounds. Go anywhere where the working musicians are performing and they're gigging on these!
