The MicroTrack 24/96 is a rugged high-fidelity mobile 2-channel digital recorder that records WAV and MP3 files to CompactFlash or microdrives—perfect for everything from professional field recording to corporate meetings, training, education and worship. Record via balanced line inputs or built-in high-fidelity microphone preamps complete with 48V phantom power for studio-quality microphones. Connect MicroTrack 24/96 to a PC or Mac via USB and simply drag and drop recordings to your computer for immediate editing or Web posting. Power derives from a lithium-ion battery, and the unit can recharge via the computer’s USB connection or optional USB power adapter. 20 years in the studio, I'm impressed with the sound quality, ease of use, adjustments and small size. The ONLY concern is the cheesy internal Lithium battery, which starts to "wear down" within days of purchase and which is sure to fail within a few months of regular use. Since everything runs THROUGH the battery, even though it has USB power, that power runs THROUGH the battery, so that when it fails [and I worry about that constantly] the unit will die, and you will be shipping it back to the manufacturer for a $75 replacement, to arrive back in a couple of weeks. Other than that, the quality is unmatched, and for me it's the perfect "safety" recording, while I capture audio LIVE with my USB mixer and laptop. Hopefully someday they will address the cheap battery issue, with either a High Quality internal battery, or by designing the unit to bypass the battery in USB mode, so that you won't be stranded when it dies [and it will die on you soon].

"This is outstanding in the field! imagine you wouldn't have access to normal recording equipment or electricity! Imagine again that you are limited on time and want to bump this on a computer before a dead line. Which, this would make a great upgrade from minidisk recorders. This unit has ALOT of features in a very compact design, and for under $500. That makes this the best option for anyone looking to record at well above broadcast quality, but limited in space, equipment, and time."

This is a very handy tool for any audio/MIDI/recording professional. Great for collecting live samples. The recording quality is amazing. Very high fidelity.

"PERKS OF THIS PRODUCT; Conveniently slim design,easy, impressive connectivity with it's rca lineouts for it's size. DRAWBACKS OF THIS PRODUCT; Internal battery is it's only power source for operation and does not hold a charge for very long. It does not go into standby mode automatically,which means that you will have to set the amount of time you want to shut the power off.Between that and the fact that the firmware has to boot up every time you power up,it makes it impossible to record random,spontaneous events(as when you need to record in an instant. The diameter of the openings that the rca jacks sit in are unusually small,so you will have a hard time trying to find cables that fit firmly. If you plan to make a series of short recordings,you will be gravely disappointed,as you can not access and play files individually until you transfer them to pc. Too many on-screen controls and not enough manual controls for my tastes. The flash cards are difficult to insert and the card slot is open faced,which does not offer any protection from dust and such. The casing feels flimsy and there does not seem to be much protecting the lcd screen. There are no condensor mics built in. The only sound adjustments to play with are bass & treble controls. I strongly recommend the Edirol R-1"
