Korg PS60 Performance Synthesizer
The Korg PS60 Performance Synthesizer is the result of years of Korg keyboard evolution, creating what may very well be a Korg Revolution!
Its cutting edge EDS-i sound engine (Enhanced Definition Synthesis – integrated) is derived from the popular Korg M3 and M-50 synths, and adds a few button pushes and knob twirls in the process.
For years digital synths have forgone the dedicated knobs and buttons in favor of complex LCD screens, deep digital menus and pages upon pages of sub-menus that lead to the editing and tweaking of sounds, patches, drums samples and such. There was seemingly no longer a need to provide tactile control as it was considered somewhat long in the tooth, unnecessary excess.
Well if you’ve ever heard the old adage “what comes around goes around”, never before has that adage been so aptly applied! Knobs are back! Buttons and sliders were missed badly by seasoned vets as well as any players who’ve found they were struggling to make a quick change in a mission-critical performance or studio setting. They barked and complained until the cows came home.
Welcome home cows! The Korg PS60 not only brings back the control that makes performing a pleasurable experience, but adds a few New twists (and pushes and slides…) to this philosophy.
The Korg PS60 has 61 natural touch, velocity-sensing keys. With a healthy polyphony of 120 voices (60 in double mode) you’ll be hard pressed to exhaust your note count, even in complex performance arrangements. Bravo! There are 440 preloaded programs (512 in all) and 15 preloaded performances (20 in all). A performance is comprised of up to 6 main timbres and has layer and split functionality. The built-in effects (71 types in all) allow you to choose 63 for insert effects, 4 types each for the 2 master effects, shaping the overall sound of your patches. The sound quality is lush, stark, thick and delicious…and decidedly KORG.
This brings us to those dedicated controls. There are knobs, buttons and sliders, all on the top panel and within easy reach to control nearly every aspect of the Korg PS60. Tweak away while you play! A pitch bend/modulation joystick (an old Korg favorite) with a nifty lock button is on the synth’s surface so you can grab it in the heat of performance. You can easily shape the sound of your PS60 with the 3 dedicated EQ knobs, Low/Mid/High. A way cool rotary speaker simulator allows you to, while playing an organ patch for instance, control the speed of the “horn” via a Slow/Fast button, a tweaker’s delight! A mucho useful Octave button along with a Transpose button make it simple to make changes to your octave positioning or key of song. A backlit, 2 line LCD provides 16 characters of information, easily readable even in a dark-lit scenario. It has a contrast adjustment on the back panel.
A handy USB port allows for USB-MIDI interfacing as well as communication with a computer. Packaged with the PS60 is an Editor/Plug-in editor program that works either as standalone or within your favorite DAW. It’s RTAS, VST and AU compatible and it works just like a virtual software instrument with the advantage of your PS60 providing the sounds, effects for the sounds, and overall horsepower. This frees your CPU of doing all the intense math needed to create the dense, rich, amazing sounds emanating from the PS60.
Audio outputs include L/R ¼” as well as a 3.5mm stereo mini-phone jack for headphones. There’s the standard MIDI I/O along with the USB port.
The Korg PS60 weighs in at a paltry 10lbs so tuck it under your arm and get it to the gig…no chiropractor needed!
The PS60 brings Korg’s legendary synthesis and sampled sounds to a value-packed synthesizer, priced within reach of all musicians of all skill levels, young and mature alike. Just Play It!
