This really is a great guitar. Ibanez has the action a little high, I lowered it and adjusted the neck, now it plays great. It's extremely fun to play, I hardly even play a 6 string anymore. I am most comfortable with 7 strings, but its not too difficult a transition to the 8. Stretch your hands and fingers or they will get sore quick. Also, some amps have a hard time handling the low F or F#, such as most Mesas I've tried (Rectifiers especially), very loose low end, not tight or articulate. Peavey's handle the low end very well, clear and tight. I would recommend changing the F# to a 68-72 gauge string, the 65 it comes with is pretty loose. I also wish I could get this with a Kahler Tremolo, or I'm sure Ibanez could deseign one. This is a METAL guitar, make no mistake, with active EMG's, country blues, or smooth jazz is a stretch...

I use the Ibanez 8-string for Country, Jazz, Blues and Rock. With the added bass strings can get a bass rhythm and lead guitar all in one. I would have preferred passive pickups, but there is nothing wrong with these. Very hot and great sound.

Perfect for Melodic Death Metal that's not old school Enya sounding death like some reviewers are playing (i.e. - Warrent is not Death metal). Opens up a whole new range with low F#

This guitar is amazing takes your playing to new levels of sonic creativity ..the neck is hard to get used to if you have never played a 7 string before start there before jumping to 8 string its odd but once you adjust its just amazing!

[...] it's an RG, and it's built solid like one. It lives up to that reputation. Very good hard rock or metal sound. Those much lower-than-normal power-chords sound different down that low. Take note. Dive-bombing on that extra-extra low string shakes the ground. Clean sound is only as questionable as the amp you're playing through. Good for surf, actually, if you can dial in that sound on your amp. You're really cutting into bassist's territory with this thing, though. Ibanez could have offered a bass model also set up for another lower string; they'd sell more of two products, then. In the meantime, fire your bassist... you're doing his job now as well as your own. That extra string is hard to come by right now as this is the first "production" eight-string available on the market. Same thing with any other small issues with the model. Give it a few years. It should at least catch on with metal musicians... which there are plenty of. Enough interest from them can cause demand for accessories for this model.
