The Midtown Custom combines the best of legendary solidbody and archtop designs from Gibson USA’s historic past with modern styling to come up with the ultimate hybrid Gibson. Taking a cue from the Les Paul’s chambered body design, the Midtown Custom starts with a solid mahogany body that is strategically chambered for optimum resonance and weight relief. The body shape is based on the iconic Gibson ES-335, but is scaled down to a more player friendly body size that increases comfort, yet still maintains that Gibson tradition.
A solid mahogany neck is carved to a fast, comfortable '60s-style profile that measures .800" at the 1st fret and .875" at the 12th, and capped with a black Richlite fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets. Richlite is an environmentally sustainable dense material made from renewable wood resources. Hard enough that it is used as a commercial kitchen countertop, Richlite makes for an environmentally responsible alternative to Rosewood and Ebony. The thinner neck profile will feel right at home in your fretting hand as you fly up and down the fretboard. The body and fingerboard are accentuated with white binding along the edges, creating a classic, clean vintage look; while mirror dot inlays adorn the fingerboard.
The electronic schematic is classic Gibson all the way, featuring the familiar Les Paul style dual volume and tone control layout, along with a 3-way selector. The Midtown Custom is outfitted with a pair of Gibson’s acclaimed BurstBucker™ humbuckers, a BB2 in the neck and a hotter BB3 in the bridge. BurstBuckers™ are Gibson's most accurate recreation of the legendary PAF humbuckers of the late '50s and early '60s, and include details like unpolished Alnico II magnets and unequal turns of 42 AWG wire on each bobbin, which results in the added "edge" or "bite" for which genuine PAFs are famous. To combat microphonic squeal at high volumes, however, these BurstBuckers are double vacuum wax potted, a must for the high-gain guitarist.
Hardware on the Midtown Custom includes the timeless, classic tune-o-matic bridge/stop tailpiece combo, designed to stabilize tuning, as well as maximize sustain.
