I've just started to appreciate and own Martin's again. I'd made up my mind that I needed to lay my hands on a good old fashioned Martin Dreadnaught but my budget wasn't up to the task of what I really wanted... or so I thought. I'd made my mind up to look at some of the HPL instruments as I have a Little Martin I'd got for my birthday and love it to death. So a hunting I went and after playing five or six different models I was handed a DX1 with the Indian Rosewood HPL back and sides (DX1R). Brothers and sisters... bow your heads. I fell in love with this axe. It plays so sweet that it almost plays itself. Deep, rich basses with a mellow sustain. Like a bell mids and trebles that snap and pop like crystal with each note. The neck feels and handles oh so nice. Projection and tone is pure Martin no matter if I'm using a pick or finger picking. She is definitely plain Jane to look at, but then the looks are the only thing plain about her and even that has a natural old school Martin beauty. Anyone worrying about HPL, Stratabond and so on, need to get over it. Martin engineered a serviceable, extremely playable instrument at a price most of us can afford. For those who whine about it just not being a D28 or "real Wood Guitar", I have this to report. I played my DX1R side by side against a STD D28, HD28, D35, D18, D16 and a few Taylors. The only instrument that came close to playing as sweet as the DX1 was the D16, and the difference was so insignificant that I would be very hard pressed to justify spending over a grand for an instrument when I can get one of like service and quality for almost half what I'd otherwise be paying. Two things I don't like about this guitar are no case comes with it and mine has been giving me some grief with the neck wanting to lay flat causing fret buzz. I've played long enough to know this happens sometimes... you get a temperamental instrument that you have to tweak and tame, and if it doesn't correct, Martin and the dealer will make good on it and have worked very hard to get the problem resolved already. (Psssst This even happens to D28 and D45's occasionally gang). You want a good solid Martin guitar without going in debt for one of the higher end models then I recommend checking out the DX1 and other HPL models. Remember to humidify your instruments during the winter months too! You will not regret it.

I just Picked up my Martin DX1 last week, and man it sounds expensive. After about 2 months of trying out all sorts of acoustic guitars in the [$]to [$]range, it finally came down to Seagull S6, Yamaha FG750, and this guitar. I personally go for the more bass sounding guitar with a nice warm tone. For example I play a lot of Jack Johnson songs and rifts. The Seagull S6 was a good competition for those bright sounding songs, but overall the solid sound of the DX1 overtook my ears. It sound specially nice when I do guitar slaps, almost like its hooked up to an amp. I been playing for about a year now and I wanted to take one step and move on from the guitar(Yamah 700) I started with, but certainly feels like a big step after playing this guitar.

I went to Sam Ash to buy a jumbo with a cut out and a pre-amp but after I found this one I wouldn't let go of it. It was miles ahead of the guitar I was planning to get. I have never played a guitar in this price range that is even close to this one. It makes me question the need for more expensive guitars after owning this one. Its not much to look at but the sound is amazing. The only bad thing is the strings seem really far from the fretboard as you move up the neck. However this should be an easy fix. If you want a great guitar for a great price buy this one.

"I sampled numerous similar makes and models from $500-$1000 range and did not find one that compared. The sound is balanced, it projects great tone, and the action is darn near perfect. I've had mine for two years now and it plays like new. The only difference is that the new models have a lighter stained bridge compared to mine. You might find that the staining and finish varies somewhat from instrument to instrument, but the playability is unbelievably consistent. Martin quality is in full effect with this model."
