At 46 I was ready to get back into drumming, I debated buying used as opposed to new, after deciding I wanted new I realized I would have to sacrifice bells and whistles like better quality heads better cymbals etc. But after tons of research and sound checks I decided on gretsch. I played the kit on display at sam ash in Columbus ohio and I could not believe the sound that came from this kit. Total surprise. When the salesman brought out the kit in Cobalt blue I was done. After setting the kit up at home I have to say that yeah it is popular to change the heads, but the heads tuned properly aren't that bad, I plan to get all the mileage out of these heads before changing. I bought the pearl 900 series hardware pack and the sabian b8 pro super set. This in my opinion is a great foundation kit to begin building on if you want new. I plan on ordering the 16 inch floor tom in Cobalt from Gretsch this spring, replacing the heads to Aquarian and slowly upgrading my cymbals to Sabian AAX. I would recomend this kit to anyone wanting to play drums, Gretsch hit a home run with the Ash wood.

I bought this kit back in March and I have not been dissapointed...
I have to agree with the other reviews that the heads which come on the drums should be replaced. I replace the original heads with Remo Controlled sound heads and now all the Tom's sing!!!
This set easily sounds as good, if not better then some sets costing far more.
The snare does have some reverb to it, but a new Remo head took care of that straight away. The snare now has a nice crack to it.
All in all you can't go wrong, and the 8inch Tom is a great bonus, allowing you to create some really awsome grooves!

I bought this set back in June and it is great. The sound is tremendous. The construction is superb. The extra 8" tom is a great addition. The only cons are the Gretsch Heads and the snare reverb. The heads are average at best. I recommend buying new batter heads with the set. I also placed a RemO tuning ring on the snare. Now the snare has a nice punch sound.

I know i wasn't sure about these drums at first but i was sooohoh wrong, i figuered for the price hey i might as well and they looked solid and dang i gotta say i love em'. Im used to playing a pearl ex set and a small pdp set so i was skeptical about gretsch but there good and im stickin with em. The gretsch heads that come with the kit are total shiz but if you throw on some ec2s they frigin rock. something about havin that extra little tom just makes me happy and if you tune up the bass right its like a cannon. as far as im concerned a shell pack for this price does not get any better than these sweet mamas
