The Starfire IV ST Maple puts a modern twist on a highly popular semi-hollow Guild classic. With its graceful double cutaway and thinline body, the original Starfire IV was prized by many guitarists from the mid-1960s onward for its incomparable tone and feel. Premium features include an all-maple body (with a figured top on the Natural model), a solid spruce center block, rosewood fingerboard, and Guild's hallmark mahogany neck with maple center seam. This model features a Tune-O-Matic bridge, with a stopbar tailpiece for increased sustain and stability. The Starfire IV ST Maple includes dual LB-1 "Little Bucker" pickups, replicas of Guild's original smaller size humbucking pickups. Available in Emerald Green, Vintage Sunburst or Natural, and includes hardshell case.

- Comfortable Neck
- Versatile Tone Machine
- Warmer Than Maple
This review is for the 2015 mahogany-bodied Starfire IV ST in Cherry Red, which was discontinued by Guild and does not appear in the 2016 Guild catalog. So, if you want a Starfire IV with a mahogany body and stop bar tailpiece, you should buy one soon before stock runs out. Otherwise, you'll have to go with the floating bridge/Guild harp tailpiece design to get the warmer tone of a mahogany body. If you want the stoptail setup, you'll have to go with the maple-bodied Starfire IV ST.
As newer player, my criteria are simple: playability, tonal range and stunning good looks. This guitar sits perfectly (I play seated, mostly) and the neck fits my longer fingers comfortably. I wanted a step up from my smaller Epi ES-339 (which is very playable in its own right) and this guitar is perfect. Given the factory standard .011s, I thought I would might want to change to a lighter gauge, but with the narrow jumbo frets and rosewood fingerboard, the setup works very well for me.
The range of tones available from the LB-1 humbuckers and separate volume and tone controls is very broad and serves all my musical moods (so far). The tone is noticeably warmer than my maple-bodied ES-339. The transparent red finish reveals the beauty of the mahogany below and is drop-dead gorgeous! Fit and finish are refined and beautiful.
Bottom line: if you are in the market for a 335-style guitar, the Starfire IV ST is a true contender – don't buy without trying one!
