While the Les Pauls made between 1958 and 1960 consist of some of the most coveted electric guitars in history, the '59 'Bursts are by far the most sought-after out of those 3 years. The "Holy Grail" of Gibson solidbody electric guitars, the 1959 Les Paul is viewed with the highest regards by guitarists and collectors alike because of their historical significance and their exceeding rarity, with a mere 635 guitars shipped that year. With Les Paul sales diminishing every year since 1953 — just a year after the Les Paul was introduced — Gibson chose to update the look of the Les Paul in 1958 from a flashy Gold Top finish to an elegant cherry sunburst. The tops of those first 'Bursts in '58 exhibited very slight, subtle figure patterns and were relatively plain in comparison to the beautiful highly-figured maple tops on those '59 Les Pauls. Even after 50+ years, the 1959s Les Paul Standards continue to hold their place as the most desirable instruments in the Les Paul family, and today, the Gibson Custom Standard Historic 1959 Les Paul Standard offers a faithful reproduction of those highly prized instruments, with accuracy down to the very last detail.

The Standard Historic 1959 Les Paul Standard holds true to the classic '59 ingredients with its one-piece, lightweight solid mahogany body and its beautiful bookmatched flame maple top that sports an authentic 1950's-style top carve. The one-piece mahogany neck is carved into classic '59 profile, which remains as one of Gibson's most beloved neck profiles. For timeless Gibson playability, the traditional 24.75"-scale neck is also topped off with a period-correct 12" radius one-piece solid Indian rosewood fingerboard that carries cellulose trapezoid inlays. Remaining faithful to the design and tone, the Standard Historic 1959 Les Paul Standard features a Historic Long Tenon neck joint with hot hide glue adhesive along with a vintage-style truss rod assembly with no tubing.

In order to capture the authentic vintage tone of those coveted late '50s PAF humbuckers with the utmost accuracy, Gibson Custom took a closer look at the design of the originals. Made in the image of those classic PAFs, these Custom Bucker pickups employ Alnico III magnets to deliver that renowned PAF bite, growl, and chime. The pickups are routed through a traditional control compliment featuring independent volume and tone controls for each pickup. Gold top hat control knobs further enhance the vintage vibe. The Standard Historic 1959 Les Paul Standard also comes equipped with vintage-accurate nickel-plated hardware, which includes a set of reissue Kluson Deluxe Green Key Single Band tuning machines, an ABR Thumbwheel bridge, and a reissue lightweight aluminum stopbar tailpiece.

The Standard Historic 1959 Les Paul Standard comes dressed in a hand-sprayed nitro lacquer finish that will allow this vintage-inspired beauty to age and "breathe" just as the originals did. The finish also features authentic aniline dye filler, and comes in an array of 'Burst finishes that offer an accurate reflection of the varying degrees in which the original finish aged and faded over time. Gibson Custom's Vintage Original Spec (VOS) treatment adds an extra touch of old-school look and feel. Other period-correct appointments include '50s-style cream top and fingerboard binding, a Holly head veneer with authentic pearloid inlays, a 6/6 nylon nut, tortoise shell side dots on the side of the neck, and '50s-style plastics. Comes complete with a 2016 Gibson Custom Medallion switchplate cover, a reissue brown Les Paul case with pink fur lining, a bound Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity, and an extra black plastic switch cover plate.
