Epiphone Les Paul

It was while working at Epiphone in the early nineteen fifties that Les Paul began working on what was to become the guitar that would bear his name. After Gibson acquired Epiphone in 1957 and the two companies developed a close relationship that still lives on. An Epiphone Les Paul is more than just a cost-effective version of the Gibson model, it is a true, quality instrument with roots that go back to the very birth of the Les Paul itself. [read more]

Design and Performance

A guitar’s body and wood type are crucial in determining the kind of tone and sustain it can produce. Like the Gibson Les Paul, Epiphone Les Paul guitars are commonly made with mahogany wood or mahogany with maple tops. A highly dense and durable mahogany body gives the guitar a thick low end sound while providing smooth highs that truly soar. Some Epiphone Les Paul models have veneer maple tops while more advanced versions have fully carved tops made of either flame or quilt maple. Maple tonewoods such as these are generally used to achieve tighter, brighter and stronger sounds.

The Epiphone Les Paul utilizes premium tonewoods on the neck, too. Select models feature a mahogany bolt-on neck and others use a mahogany set-neck design - the same design used on the Gibson Les Paul. Although there are no glaring differences in sound between these two distinct neck designs, set-necks typically provide a resonant sound that’s a little warmer and fuller, while bolt-on necks are usually sharper in tone. Neither neck design is limiting in any way, and more importantly, the choice of neck design largely comes down to the preference and skill of the player.

Most Epiphone Les Pauls use a warm sounding rosewood fretboard but a few are made with a deluxe ebony board, which provides players with an enhanced, crisp tone. Epiphone models are also specifically made with a cost-effective polymer finish that enhances both performance and visual appeal.
