With the S90XS Music Synthesizer, Yamaha set out to not only improve upon the previous generation’s S90 Synth, but to create what would ultimately be the finest stage and studio synth available today. Have they achieved their goal? Let’s take a look.
There are 2 sizes of the S90XS available, an 88 key and a 76 key version, both with an identical feature set and both with graded hammer action, full-cut piano-style keys.
Let’s start with the most important element of any musical instrument, the sounds. Yamaha is world famous for their acoustic grand pianos and subsequent piano samples, so it’s only proper that they load the S90XS with a whopping 142 megabytes of dedicated piano sounds, including the deep rich sound of their famous S6 concert grand piano. In addition, there is the CFlllS piano sample found on the Yamaha Motif XS. You’ll enjoy a truly riveting piano playing experience. You’re fully covered in Ivory!
Speaking of the Motif XS, all of its other sounds are here too! Every waveform under the sun (and moon, for that matter) is available and is of the highest possible sound quality, further cementing what Yamaha synths are famous for. You have 1,024 normal voices, 64 drum kits, 128 GM voices + 1 GM drum kit, User locations: 128 x 4 banks.
Things have gotten significantly better for the live performing keyboardist as the S90XS provides helpful and useful features to make your onstage experience comfy, cozy, powerful and just plain cool! The handy Performance Creator makes it easier than ever before to select voices, layers, split drum performances (driven by an arpeggiator) all on the fly using dedicated buttons and knobs. These light up when engaged so you’re in comfortable control, even on a dark stage. There are dedicated buttons for octave and transpose, and a tap tempo button to change the speed of a midi sequence or arpeggio. As a performing keyboardist, I need not tell you how important it is to have these useful functions right there, all laid out logically and ergonomically at your fingertips. Have a seat because really, we’ve only just begun…
You can record audio into the Yamaha S90XS. Capture your performance, turning it into audio data on the fly. Plug in a microphone or a guitar and add your singing or playing to the rest of the music. This makes the S90XS a songwriter’s dream tool! Recording is stored on either the built-in flash memory (192 MB), a USB memory stick or thumb drive. The implications for a one-man-band use are obvious: load up a USB thumb drive with your gig’s backing tracks and you’ll have an all-in-one live-performance monster. This enables you to leave the laptop or CD player home and keep things streamlined.
In the studio, the Yamaha S90XS is the perfect complement to your computer setup. With the DAW remote function, you’ll be able to control all the aspects of your favorite DAW and VST software instruments utilizing the sliders and knobs. Tap into the tone generator and the S90XS provides you with all the functionality and sounds you’ll need to compose, track, mix and master complete finished works. The included Special Remote Editor makes it easy to change and organize the templates as well as edit all aspects of the synth. The S90XS Voice Editor gives you complete control of all the keyboard’s sounds, settings and functions. Also included is Cubase AI, an audio/MIDI sequencer program for Mac/PC that enables you to do a full on, professionally finished production.
Well, we’ve run out of room, but could have easily continued. The feature rich, incredible-sounding Yamaha S90XS Music Synthesizer just may be the new de facto standard in synthesizer workstation performing keyboard instruments. Phew!
