The solid-wood Taylor experience begins with the 300 Series. The Taylor 320 'Hog Top' is a stunning acoustic guitar with Mahogany top and Sapele back and sides for a visually stunning look and dark but sweet complex tone that's perfect for a wide range of styles while maintaining a unique character. To complement the dark, rich-grained complexion of the mahogany tops, these models feature a black pickguard with a mix of black binding and white purfling and a crisp black and white rosette. An all-satin finish evokes an earthy vintage aura.

The African sapele used for backs and sides of the 300 Series shares many of mahogany’s tonal properties; distinctions include slightly less midrange punch and an extra splash of treble brightness. Compared to a Sitka spruce top, the mahogany top’s greater density produces extra compression, which translates into a more controlled, focused tone. A spruce top will yield a quicker response, while a mahogany top adds a more subtle “roll-in” effect to the notes, along with even sustain. The mahogany’s tonal focus will articulate clearly with other instruments both on stage and in a recorded mix. The compression of the mahogany top will suit players who have a more aggressive strumming or picking attack.

The Taylor 320 is a dreadnought shaped guitar. The most traditional of guitar shapes, Bob Taylor has evolved the Taylor Dreadnought over time to honor its enduring sonic heritage yet also refine the look and sound into a more modern package. The Taylor Dreadnought still boasts that powerful dreadnought tone that old school pickers expect, with deep lows and crisp highs, but with a voice that, like every Taylor, is more evenly balanced across the entire tonal spectrum. Perhaps more than any other shape, the Dreadnought remains linked with roots music like bluegrass and folk, in part because of its traditional role in defining those sounds. Pickers and strummers with an aggressive attack will love the Taylor Dreadnought’s blend of power and articulation, which allows for clear lead lines and crisp, driving rhythms.

The Taylor 320 features Forward Shifted with Relief Rout bracing. The Standard II version used on the 300 series instruments shifts the X forward (closer to the soundhole) and incorporates a Taylor-patented relief rout. The Taylor patented relief rout is a tone-enhancing voicing technique in which a groove is carved along the inside edges of the top. This groove is similar in function to the re-curve on a violin — it “loosens up” the edges of the top, generating extra flexibility without sacrificing structural integrity. Taylor first began using this groove in 2002. The result is increased bass and volume with a balanced tone. These refinements enable more of the top to vibrate, enhancing the tone.
