214ce-SB-DLX Sunburst Deluxe Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric GuitarThe back and sides of the 214ce-SB-DLX Sunburst Deluxe Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar are crafted from layered Indian rosewood and paired with a tobacco sunburst finished solid Sitka spruce soundboard, just as the standard 214ce-SB, but features a full-gloss body and a matching inner veneer to cater to this guitar's upscale appearance (the standard 214ce-SB has a satin finished back/gloss top). Tonally, rosewood laminate and Sitka spruce give the 214ce-SB-DLX it's clear, well-balanced tonality across the entire spectrum, and whether you're strumming chords or playing a nice fingerstyle arrangement, the Grand Auditorium body is sure to deliver. The Grand Auditorium body shares the same length, width and depth as the dreadnought body, but has a smaller waist. These refined proportions give the GA it's unique acoustic voice while making it the most musically versatile of all the Taylor shapes, perfect for any musical scenario you throw at it—whether your recording in the studio or on the stage, performing with a band or performing solo, the Grand Auditorium won't disappoint. On top of it all, the body of the 214ce-SB-DLX Deluxe features white binding and a smooth-lined venetian cutaway for enhanced accessibility to those higher frets. The sapele neck on the Taylor 214ce-SB-DLX is topped with an ebony fingerboard and features beautiful small diamond inlays as opposed to the dot inlays used on the standard 214ce-SB.

I purchased my lefty 214CE DLX sight/sound unseen based purely on a couple of YouTube video clips I watched, and the fact that Taylor modified the 214CE line with several aesthetic improvements: gloss finish,indian rosewood back and sides, forward shifted bracing, gorgeous SB finish, rosewood and the better Expression system. (It's not like we lefties can simply walk into any music store and try anything on the rack). I was never particularly impressed with the previous 214CE line, as they simply don't sound full enough to my ears. I guess I'm a Martin lover at heart, as most acoustics I've owned pale in comparison to the big full sound of my Martin D28. I also own a Taylor GS mini, which I absolutely love, so I decided to take the plunge with the new 214CE DLX. Truth be told, when I received it, I wasn't blown away as much I thought I'd be. While the build, construction, and overall performance of the guitar smokes the original 214CE and is a cut above the vast majority of guitars I've tried in this price range, I was still a bit disappointed with the overall bass response. Sounded fantastic when played finger-style, and single note flat picked notes sounded great too, but when strummed it had that bright, brassy overly sustained tone that I didn't care for. (If a Martin equates to a piano-like tone, then this was more "harpsichord"). I tried several gauge picks - heavy, light, medium, nylon, etc. and couldn't find an overall tone I liked. FINALLY, after trying it with a Dunlop heavy thumb pick, there was gorgeous balance, fullness, and bright, chimey top end that sustained for days. The key, for me, was getting some of my thumb flesh mixed in with the thumb pick. So be forewarned: If you love the trademark Taylor tone you'll probably be happy as is, but if you favor more traditional fatter/warmer/fuller "Martin-ish" tones you may need to experiment a bit with your approach as I did.
