Comments about Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've tried a lot of compressors sustainers and this is the best I found. Other than a rack mount studio compressor limiter like a Urie, this is the best stomp box I tried. I haven't tried the "Neely" one yet. And I don't see how it could be a whole lot better unless it has some kind of sophisticated noise gate system built in. I don't know. Anyway, this doesn't add any noise of it's own, yet I've read complaints by some who say it is noisy. Remember, a compressor does lower your signal ceiling, so it makes your output level closer to the "noise floor". Thereby, you should put this type of device at the very beginning of the chain. In other words go directly from your guitar into this box. That way you don't compress your signal closer to the noise floor of all the other boxes and devices you're using. I prefer not using a noise gate unless absolutely necessary. I hope this doesn't confuse anyone.
Now with all that said, I couldn't detect any noise coming from the effect itself, a big plus in my books. And I rate this device high because as far as sound quality goes, it's right up there with the MXR Dyna Comp. Some people like the simplicity of the Dyna Comp and it's great sound. The CS-3 has the same great sound but has a couple of added features, tone and attack. I like simplicity but found I can get some interesting variations using different attack settings, like getting that hard biting sound to a softer "pop". The tone control also is cool for a warmer empathis. It's hard to describe, you have to try it and experiment with this a while to get my jest. When you turn it off, I believe it is a true bypass cause there's no change in my original tone. It seems very rugid and well built, metal casing (metal is a must in a stomp box, cheap plastic ones won't hang if you're a true rock and roller).
Now the down side; This thing will go through a battery faster than a rabbit being chased by a cayote. If you're a professional, get the adapter. They sell adapters here with a daisy-chain that will power this and several other brands besides the Boss, and they're really inexpensive. As far as reliability, I don't know, I haven't owned it that long. I did own a Dyna Comp that lasted 10 years until someone stole it. It's probably still working wherever it is?
Bottom line, this isn't the cheapest, but it's relatively inexpensive. And it does what it's sposed to really good. Boss is a very reputable outfit, and I've had good luck with thier equipment. Try it out for yourself, I think you'll be happy with it. That's just my opinion.
All I can say is, try it out for yourself. And if you get the chance, A/B compare it to the expensive "Neely" one and let me know what makes the Neely so great.

Comments about Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I like this pedal and I use it quite a bit. But I am still trying others and looking for the "perfect" sustainer, so I have to give this one a 4, not a 5. No real complaints, I just expect to find a little more sustain, maybe little less high end. Until then, though, this is my sustain pedal.
