Comments about Gretsch G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

I've been looking at various Gretsch guitars for a while now. I love the sound and the feel of them but I couldn't justify the price. I was a little concerned about the Korean made versions as I wasn't sure about the quality control. As I read more and more reviews on the G5420T it became clear my concerns were unfounded, so I went to my local store and tried it out.

This is a well made guitar by anyone's standards. There are some bells and whistles missing, but at this price it's understandable. The fit and finish is impeccable. The action and tone are pure Gretsch quality. The few items I think could use improvement such as the tuners and the pickups can easily be upgraded at a reasonable price. Eventually I'll put some locking tuners on it and upgrade the pickups to some TV Jones classics. But for now, I can easily live with what's there. Those additions will be nuances to improve the guitar, not corrections to deficiencies.

This is an amazing price if you're in the market for a Gretsch guitar that has all of the famous Gretsch sound and feel. Be prepared however if you've never played a true hollow body electric for some adjustments in your playing technique. Unlike solid body and semi-hollow bodies, this picks up all of the minute nuances of your playing style, and often times the tone you're trying to achieve is really dependent upon your technique, so you may need to clean up a few things that get covered up in other types of guitars.

The best thing is, this fills an obvious gap in my lineup of guitars that will allow me to accurately achieve the right tones for certain types of material such as jazz, some blues styles, rockabilly, and fingerpicked nashville sounds (ala Chet Atkins).

Comments about Gretsch G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

Although I don't have a ton of experience playing expensive guitars, I have played many at various guitar shops. I fell in love with this the first time that I played it. Very smooth and great sounds. I play this through the Yamaha THR and it has confirmed what I know about becoming a better guitar player. That is, if you are having fun, it transates to more playing/practice. That makes you better. You will have a blast with this guitar!! BTW if you read a lot about Gretsch guitars, you will see that some of them easily fall out of tune. This one does not. The bridge is fixed and does not float. I have no tuning problems at all.

Comments about Gretsch G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body Electric Guitar:

This guitar, after adding a set of Ernie Ball .011 strings and lowering the action, plays better than any other guitar I've played, including high-end Gibsons and Fenders. I play Christian contemporary and some '60s rock(Clapton, Beattles, etc.). The pickups fit these generes perfectly, but it is afterall only the first day. So far I've played it through a twin reverb, a hotrod deluxe, and a mustang II. It sounds great through all of those and I will soon play it through some more. Will add an updated review soon.
