Comments about Evans 20" EMAD Onyx Batter Drum Head:

This kick drum head literally changed my entire approach to my kick. I'm an extremely old school "hydraulic-head-with-a-pillow-in-the-kick" player...until I started using the Evans EMAD head. The built-in muffle ring eliminates that overbearing element I didn't like in a wide-open kick, that made me feel it was out of balance with the rest of the kit. Now I get all the punch and definition and control I felt I was missing if I didn't have some muffling inside the kick. So now I can push more air, but get the controlled and defined sound I desired...without having that dead "thud" if the pillow was angled slightly wrong. Of the two muffle rings the EMAD comes with, I prefer the wider one. And once Evans added the Onyx EMAD (I use Onyx heads on my toms), I've begun to switch back and forth between the heavyweight and the Onyx, using the Onyx if I want yet one more layer of a darker tone to my kick. In fact I now use this one exclusively on my Pearl Rhythm Travel kit, which (combined with a Kick Port on the resonant head) makes the shallow kick sound much deeper and bigger than it should! So if you were like me, using a pillow or blanket inside your kick, I challenge you to try the EMAD head, either heavyweight or Onyx, on your kick.
