Like most inventions, the electric guitar had to weather numerous failures over many years before striking gold and changing the world as we know it. Starting in the early 1910s, some inventors tried attaching telephone transmitters to string instruments (violins, banjos, etc.). In the 1920s, some people tried hooking carbon button microphones to the bridges of these instruments, but the placement resulted in a flood of vibration from the bridge rather than the strings and body.

However, in 1931 George Beauchamp and Adolph Rickenbacker invented the first workable electric guitar pickup, which they put on a lap steel guitar. With the growing need for guitar amplification in the Big Band era, 1932 was both the first year you could buy an electric guitar commercially and the first time anyone heard an electric guitar during a live performance (Gage Brewer played an Electric Hawaiian A-25 lap-steel guitar).

Later in the 1930s Eddie Durham pioneered the electrified jazz guitar. Then in the late 1940s Leo Fender and Les Paul each came up with the solid-body electric guitar originating models (the Telecaster and Les Paul, respectively) that are still made, played, and loved today. From there, the old saying goes, the rest is history.

America began its life-long love affair with the electric guitar in the 1950s and 1960s (thanks, rock and roll!), and since then the electric guitar has defined and redefined generations of music across all genres.
